Yes & maybe. It is good that the Doberman was there first. Gives him/her dominance over the Pitt but watch out when the Pitt turns 3 or 4. That is when you may or may not see a temperament change in the Pitt. That depends on how he/she was bred.(very important)
I have had dogs turn on each other & they have lived together for years. The fighting didn't start until the dogs were mature (3-4 yr.s old). They all had been spayed/neutered so no hormones were involved. It was pack instinct & the fights were horrible. 6 dogs. They all picked on the underdog. Which is very typical. I got to where I had to seperate a couple just to keep peace.

Both dogs needs to be neutered and or spayed.
They should be of different sexes. One female and one male would be the best combo.
If they are the same sex you may have fights when the pup gets older.
The rescue I work with (a doberman rescue) will not place dogs of the same sex in the same house hold as they willmost times fight and it can get really bad.
Much will depend on you and how you run the household and what your rules are for them. Do not feed them together and do not tolerate any dominance behavior from them towards each other or other dogs in general.
I have a male Doberman and he lives with one male and one female weimaraner now and he is fine. He loves other dogs and does well with them and even likes cats.

Since you are unwilling to use a choke chain or a prong collar you are going to be putting in lots of training time. The prong collar is very effective when use properly. This is a training tool to make it easier for the owner to get the point across to the dog with less effort and very light corrections. They will not hurt the dog if used properly. I would strongly suggest you find a trainer and work one on one with them at least for one lesson. They can show you how to train the dog. It would be worth the price for a private lesson. You may only need one. Then you should be able to take it from there. I would be very very careful about using a gentle leader or any other type of head collar on a Doberman. This breed has huge issues with Wobblers and cervical vertebrae problems. I would not use a collar that pulls the head or neck on a Doberman. I do not recommend it to any of my clients. I prefer to start with a prong collar then working towards what ever collar the owner wishes to use. Sorry you lost a dog to heart issues. It happens far to often in the breed. Good luck with your new pup.

As long as the older dog didn't show any a aggression when the peppy came into the home it should be alright. The pit bull puppy will do just fine because it will grow up around the older dog and will find him/her as a friend. Puppies are really play full so don't mistake that as aggression toward the other dog. I have two dogs (Blue Heelers) that are 4 and 5 years old. I just got two more 8 week old puppies and my older dogs were a little mean at first cause they tryed to nurse on them but after a few days my dog tryed to take care of them. Almost like they were their mothers. I think everything should work out just find with your new dog. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

It's up to your Doberman. The Pit will be fine cause he will grow up with your other dog. Just put the Pup in a cage and let the Doberman be aloud to smell the other dog before you put them face to face. Good Luck
PS: about the comment that Pits turn! Thats not all true. I own 4 American Pit Bull Terriers ages 5,3,1, and 6 weeks. None of my older ones have ever shown any signs of turning, wanting to bite (anyone). When people come in my yard all they do is bark then run up to the person licking.

Depends on how responsible you are. If you think your gangsta and fight dogs, then yea, they will kill each other. But if you treat animals kindly, then they wont know how to act hostile. Mean dogs are the direct outcome of mean owners. There is no such thing as a dog being born bad. Dogs learn just like children, and if they know that you will not tolerate fighting, you should be fine. Its all these irresponsible people who have given these breeds a bad name.

Of course they can. Just get them accustomed to each other as early as possible. There is no reason those two breeds can't get along.
