Give me a break! CouchPotato29 is an idiot. 40 years ago the F-4 Phantom was shooting mig-21s out of the sky with no less than a 2 to 1 kill ratio. And the mig-17s might as well have had a target painted on them (4 to 1).

And as far as the brand new mig-35. If one of those shot down an F-22 Raptor. You would need to give that pilot every single medal and commendation in the book. They're not even in the same generation. The mig-35 may be a good acrobat but it would be shot down before it even knew it was being stalked by the F-22.
One thing about the mig-29, though. The ejections seats work well. They proved that at the air show in France a while back. lol!

Our jets are more maneuverable and have a technology advantage (electronics etc).
The migs use older technology like basic hydraulics which makes them very tough. That makes them cheaper to build so they can put more in the air.
Our main advantage is that we have a better battlefield management system, partly because our AWACS are superior.
I agree with scoot7s answer if you take out the "Largely true" part. And CouchPotato29 made some really good and valid points, but when you start out with an insult, people are less likely to listen to you.

You retard. I'm American, and I even say that the one thing that Russia can do is build planes. Russians had way better warplanes than ours. Not just the Mig-29. 40 years ago the Mig-21's were the best planes in the world also. The Russians have top class long and medium range bombers (though maybe not stealth) and they pioneered the use of effective IR and radar missles. They were the ones to invent SAM launchers. We got the design for the AIM and AMRAAM from earlier Russian missile designs. We might outfly them, but they make better stuff.
And as for the gulf war? It depends on whose piloting the plane also. Sure the Mig-29 is an awesome plane, but when its being piloted by Arabs? Jesus H. Christ man, of course a lot of those planes got shot down. Arab military doctrine is **** no matter on the air, land, or sea.

Both true and false. While they were about two to three decades behind the west when it came to electronics and the controlling of the aircraft ( in some cases, they were still using vacuum tubes), they were equal if not ahead of the west in things like basic design. Their aircraft were intentionally designed to be flown off of very rough "runways" while the west still requires all hands FOD walk downs prior to the commencement of daily flt operations. Where as in the west, an errant stone the size of a centemeter could destroy an engine, the Russians designed their intakes with leuvers to close and redirect the intake from above the aircraft. The Russians also went back in history to the days of initial flight and the canaard wing. Add to that directional flow exhaust ports and you suddenly open a whole new envelope in maneuverability that the west just failed to recognize and delve into. The Russians used a lot of fly by wire controls.

Largely true. Though they have some jets, esp the newest ones that are quite capable in a lot of regards. The USSR philosophy was to fill the skies with affordable fighters using the limited technology easily and reliably available to them. It's not as if they thought they were building F-22s and ended up with junk, that junk was sort of a part of their plan. Pilot training, tactics and command & control play an equal role in the effectiveness of fighters, but as for the jets themselves, when they work at all, they are consistently a generation behind their US peers at best. But if you launch a lot, that might be good enough.

false the Russians had some of the best fighters built that could do things our American fighters cant, thank god the cold war ended with out a shot fired we would have been in serious trouble i do think the united states has the best military around but American pride set aside they new what they were doing and i defiantly respect them even with the f-22 we are still catching up with what the su-37 and many others can do. as for the mig getting shot down in the gulf did you ever put the experiance of the pilots into consideration instead of the equipment being used. the aircraft is only as good as its pilot. and your question was about the equipment not the pilots.

Do you think USSR sold the best aircraft to Iraq?
Usually the 3d world countries receive the versions that currently being decommissioned or upgraded.
The modern version of Mig-29 OVT outperforms JSF in speed and maneuverability.

False, but the pilot is really what determines who wins and who loses! You can provide the best aircraft to a mediocre pilot and a poor aircraft to the one of the best pilots and who do you think will prevail?
