That's the topughest question that you have ever asked, Rae. It CAN be boiled down to ONE main reasn, DEPRESSION. But the causes fo depression are TOO many to count. In SPITE of the fact that today's kids have SO much givien to them the very things the kids NEED the most are NOT being given to them. Things like LOVE, ATTENTION, SAFETY, SECURITY, consitency, guidance, self discipline, Wisdom and SO many more. Kids today, have to deal with absent parents who work all the time just to survive, Are addicted to drugs or alcohol, abusive, argumentive, belkittling and too wrapped up into their OWN lives to have much left over for the kids are ONE source of depression. Also the traditional safeguards that kids have depended on for safety no longer exist, at least in their minds. Things like Caring, non-invasive, clergy, teachers, police, and other community members who have traditionally been able to "take up the slack" of neglectful parents, no longer have the time or inclination to do so anymore. The kids SEE the misbehaviour of abusive clergy, abusive teacher, rogue cops, inept politicians and aloof figures in the community as a signal that they are on their own when it comes to dealing with their problems.
Couple this with inaccessible mental counselling at school and in the medical profession because of prohibitive costs or sheer numbers of folks needing the services, makies it all look totally hopeless. The traditional "Heroes", that kids have often looked up to in the past, have been shown to be selfish, insincere, egoist MISFITS. We're NOT just losing these kids to suicide, we're also losing them to drugs, alcohol, crime, gangs, sexual promiscuity and other socially unacceptable forms of escapism. The REST are being lost to boxes. Boxes on a shelf in the living rom that glow with the pictures and music of MTV, HBO, Showtime, and other places on the TV. Other boxes sit on desks and are accompanied by monitors, keyboards and sound systems and modems. Their friends are many hundreds of miles away and are unavailable when these kids actualy NEED some time to talk with their friends. How many thousands of young people spend countless hours in chat rooms, on MySpace, on line games and other computer venues that are impersonal. Places where they may be visually attacked for any number of reasons or WORSE, preyed upon by unscrupulous adults for whatever nefarious purposes that those adults have in mind for thses kids.
Parents NEED to step up to the plate, just spend some time with the kids, you DON'T have to BUY them things, just spend time with them, go for walks and just TALK. You don't have to talk about any specific subject, just TALK, ACTUALLY have conversations with your kids. Get to KNOW them, know who they are, what they REALLY enjoy doing. Take them WITH you when you go places, don't just leave them at home with electronic "babysitters" actualy SPEND time and get to enjoy your kids. That is ALL that they really need.
Brightest Blessings,

the world is pretty depressing what with the priority being materialism. Real love and compassion are way down the list. There is unbelievable vanity in the world, how boring and depressing is that? The prisons are overflowing, the babies are still starving in Africa, and they are building a 700 mile fence to keep out the Mexicans and south americans who just want to come here to escape the excruciating poverty of their countries. We have no national healthcare and the best option for many uneducated and poor young people is to join the military and go to Iraq and die in a senseless war. Our national government is in debt trillions of dollars and we have a simple-minded president and governor of california. The best a young person can hope for is to get a college degree and become a drone in a soul-less corporation that exploits 3rd world countries. But maybe I'm just seeing the glass half-empty this morning? What would really help is for the world to wake up and find it's soul before it's too late.

Depression, a serious, under-recognized mental illness, is the cause of most suicidle thoughts. It could be situational, it could also be body chemistry.
It would be hard to analyze in a general way why certain children think this way, but I'd look at their family environments and their school/social environment first.

you really want to know? it's because
1. children are being pressured (stress) by their parents. For example: a parent forces a child to study hard just to impress their friends and relative, to make them study hard to be better than other children, to make them study hard enough to enter a course eventhough the child doesn't like it. The child is afraid of failing because their parents threatened them.
2. some of them are being bullied and harrassed by their parents, bullies, relatives, cllassmates, etc.
3. some children believe they rather die than experience hardships in life.
4. Sometimes they don't really have a choice

There are lots of reasons, neglect, abuse... I believe too that there are many children today who have a higher sensitivity to what is going on around them. They cannot take all of the negativity - it is too much for them. So many of their parents do not deal with their own issues or blame their issues on their children (ADHD). I am sorry, but I think ADHD is a scapegoat for parents who have no tolerance for their own children.

Fireball has finally made me a sick as someone possibly can.
Suicide is seen as a final option to someone who can't see or thinks they have tried all the rest. It's a desperate cry for someone to see thier pain. It's not a joke. Teen suicide is the second leading cause of death for teen. The devil tempting them!!! God that makes me utterly sick
Edit: Bringing God back has nothing to do with it. During my darkest hours I was born again Christian. It didn't keep me out of the damn psych ward

Look at what we have done in the past 40 years. Once we taught kids, that God created them, he loved them yes-bad things might happen, but he would always be with them. Morals where taught in school, the laws of the land reflected those morals, Television reflected those morals, so did our leaders. Kids have played cowboys and Indians, for years, they played soldiers for years but they knew it was playing. They knew that a home had a mom, a dad. Dad worked, mom could work or not, she cooked, cleaned and was mom. Not only that but somewhere there where grandparents, who we had Thanksgiving dinner with, and celebrated Christmas with. Now look, someone decided God had to go, so they through him out, he was replaced with the ideal that all life came from nothing, will mean nothing, and will end in nothing. You are here because of fate, nothing more. Thou shall not kill, was replace with metal detectors and armed police officers in the hall. Honor your elders was replaced with vulgar backtalking tee shirts and attitudes. To remain pure till marriage was replace with free condoms, and sneak abortions. Music that one lifted your spirits now sings of rape, lust, greed, sin, hate, death. Dad was replaced by a check from the government, mom became more interested in watching Oprah than raising her children, and if you have a day in Nov, its now called "turkey day" and the big thing is the game, not gratitude for what we have, and you know now, Christ is completely gone from Christmas. God said without a vision, the people perish, we have taught children that life is not life until we say it is, its a choice. We have taught, that if you are not happy, sometimes it best to end it all, and we will even let a Dr. help you. We are reaping what we have sown with the lives of our children.

I believe without something real to believe in then they look to the world, where if happiness is found, it is only temporary. They seek natural things to make up for the lack of spiritual things.

I don't think it's the children's fault - it the parents. At least, that's my personal opinion. It's so common today to see parenting skills lacking - allowing their children to be "taught" by television and media. There's not as active a parenting role in children's lives as there once was.
