My only advice with a purchase as major as a trek 5000 is to take your time

Most of all, do LOTS of test riding. Be as picky as you want, and make sure the guys in the shop are more than willing to help. If not, go somewhere else.

You should get on a bike, try it, and know that its the bike for you. Don't tie yourself down, by deciding on a brand...
Choose the bike not the brand.

There are many bikes at that level to try... Trek, specialized, cervello (great bikes!), LeMond, Colnago, etc...

Just take your time, don't be pressured into making a decision, and do lots and lots of test rides...

Good luck

What CT says is right. Also, check for fit. Not all brands fit the same, so it's important to check if the Trek fits you allright or not. Go to the bike shop and ask for a test ride, just ride it around and see if you're not too stretched out, or squeazed in, or something. That's what you probably need to do first.

Then compare the bike to others in the same price range.

Before dropping that kind of cash, test ride, test ride, test ride. And, test ride multiple lines, not just the 5000.

Also, with the 2008's already coming out, you might be able to find a nice discount on a 2007 if you bide your time.
