My friend lives in a wooded neighberhood were there are a lot of deer. She walks and jogs a lot in the evening when there are a lot of deer out and around. Her friends told her that the male deer are attracted to the smell of women and can attack. So she is afraid of them. I don't believe this but was just curious.

Here is the correct answer.

If it is during the rut (Oct - Nov in most areas) and if the woman is having her monthly cycle and a Buck gets a whiff of her he could very well attack her.

This is a proven fact because I know of dirty napkins being sucessfully used by hunters to attract Bucks. They actually work better than any comercial scents. I also had a girlfriend urinate on the ground during her monthly just before entering the woods. We wiped our boots in it and 1/2 an hour later shot a nice 8 point with his nose to the ground right in our foot steps.

Not true. The only time a Buck (Male) acts strange is during the rut when the Does are in estrus (in heat) and they are ready to breed (in the fall months). Bucks become a bit more hormonal, and territorial and a bit more aggressive towards other Bucks in their area, but not against humans. There have been a few attacks against men and hunters that have cornered and put a Buck in fear, resulting in the Deer feeling a need to defend itself.. Bucks have even jumped thru plate glass store windows when seeing their own reflection in the storefront window glass, thinking they are seeing/attacking another Buck in their territory.. The rumor was also that a Buck is attracted to the smell of a woman who is having her period, but to my knowledge this isn't true nor have I ever heard or read that a woman was attacked in any way or approached by a male deer.

Due to the natural behavoir of most deer in the wild, a male buck will only attack when it feels seriously threatend or cornered! The smell of any human will make any true wild buck or doe flee and run from the subject. Most of the cases i have heard of where there is a buck attack, the animal has been wounded and has no other way to escape, and the subject may be too close to the buck and it will charge if not run away.

First, the expiriment. Is she the only female runner/walker in her heavily deer laden neighborhood? I doubt it. HAs anyother women with any oder/scent been molested by a male deer? Doubt it. Sounds like she may have a bad case of being gullible. Tell she needs to check her blinker fluid as well, or if she plays softball to look into those new lefthanded bats.

Some women smells like they crawled out of a colone or perfume bottle and I can understand the poor deer wanting to attack. Smart deer.

Depending on the season a buck in rut (mid fall) can be aggressive. It's not about the woman, it about the buck being territorial.

Tell her to get a deer permit and carry a TC Contender with a 308 barrel.

Connect:

Dogs sniff out the human female menstrual odor. We all know this.

Deers use their sense of smell to percieve potential danger. Obvious.

Humans may be seen as potential threat. Logical.

Why risk it for the sake of a belief?
