Sure why not. Just don't pay for more than vetting 100$ to $150 dollars. Be careful even "rescues" are out there trying to make a buck off a pup.

On a personal note, I would never endanger a small male puppy by putting him anywhere near my male dog. Male dogs fight for a variety of reasons. Dominance, Fear, female nearby, to name a few. I had three and even though they were neutered the tried to kill each other all the time, even going so far as to pair up and gang up on the oldest to try to bring him down first then turn on each other. The reason mine fought? A FEMALE!!! Your older dog is the Alpha and he will try to establish that with the puppy. If the puppy doesn't comply, there will be a fight. This may not happen until the puppy becomes an adult. Try doing a search on inter-male aggression in dogs. There may be some tidbits of information there. Good luck!

Sure they will! At first, your Maltese may be a little unsure and the puppy you'd get might bother him a little bit, but they should be fine!
If you don't care the gender, I would go female because of the alpha male thing between dogs. Female dogs aren't going to try to be the alpha male so there's no challenge between them.

I see nothing wrong with another dog. If you ignore the older
dog while your petting the pup he won't understand. It may
make him feel rejected. That would be sad.
