Technically, anytime housing maint. goes into a house, if they see a problem they are to report it to the housing office. The problem comes when the housing office does nothing about it! Most housing offices are understaffed, which makes things even worse.
Personally, I would love to see quarterly inspections. I don't think monthly is really a wise use of manpower and $$, but quarterly would be good. At our previous base they had a HUGE base wide housing inspection after 12 families in one quarter were reported and dealt with for dirty houses. The inspection caught about 2 dozen more families.
Folks don't understand that this is gov't property and it is a privilege to live on base, not a right! It used to be when hubby first came in that you had to be an E4 to even get housing!
Joey - YOU don't pay for housing!! It's provided for you as a benefit. Privelege, not right! And it is NOT yours while you live in it, it still belongs to the gov't. Finally, they are looking for MAJOR issues, not just a few dirty dishes.

NO the command does not have any rights to even ask to come see your home. In a lot of cases they will make the member think they do because the service is giving you BAH so in some cases the Army thinks they have all these rights, when in fact they don't! The command can request, but you don't have to allow them in. Your husbands command is not responsible for anything in your private rental! BAH is a right to draw and the Army cannot withhold payment. BAH does not give the ARMY any authority over you in housing! If there is cause like abuse, complaints etc they can coordinate with your owner/agent/housing/law enforcement to come check it out, but you do not have to allow them in! at anytime! I know this because I am an Army Housing Manager. You should always seek advice from the program office and not a forum like this.

I spent several years of my 32, living in base housing. I am torn at the inspection of them. I have seen A LOT go on in base housing. I would not like it if my landlord came and inspected my house, although I do not have anything to hide, nor am I ashamed of how I keep my place, but I would feel my privacy was being invaded.
If there was complaints about a certain individual then it should be looked at, if not, then no need to inspect a house.

It isn't needed. I lived in base housing for years in different states and never had one monthly. Housing inspections vary by location. WA is a stickler and do a white glove test where as Hawaii just wanted us to sweep and make sure the light bulbs all worked and California was in the middle of the two.
Just keep your house clean and if any repairs are needed call maintenance to get it fixed and you should be okay.

that would piss me off, BUT i think it could be a good idea with some people, since i've seen some pretty disgusting living conditions....
i wouldn't like that at all b/c while i'm there, i'm paying for it and it's my house. i don't need someone coming in to tell me to do my dishes or scrub my kitchen floor.
i'm an adult and i know when and how to do that.
sometimes we forget that people living on base is just like a private sector neighborhood. that's my HOME. i don't go into private homes and inspect them....
i think that if there's an issue with someone, then it should be taken to the command and let them handle it.
that is happening within my husband's squadron, right now. their house is being inspected about once per week....

NO NO NO. It is true I joined the military, and I gave up my Constitutional rights. I took an oath to support and defend our Constitution and way of life however, My Wife and Family DID NOT!
I will work the odd hours, deploy when asked even at ungodly tempos, and do what I am told, I will stand any PERSONNEL inspection but I will always SUPPORT AND DEFEND the rights of my family who did not join.

No, it should be done by someone out of your chain of command. Bad enough you have to work with them you certainly don't want them going through your house too. BUT remember - if you sheet ain't clean at home it'll get back to your CO's office.

you can always submit a complaint to the housing office on specific units. Just be aware that the military tends to NOT involve itself in the private lives of it's members unless absolutely necessary.

Yes they should. There are a lot of pigs in this world and its best to nip that in the bud immediately. Most of base housing is connected so the roaches that are caused by your neighbor could infest your house.
