My cat has always been an indoor cat. She's 3 years old. The neighbors let their cat go outside. My cat was laying by the screen door looking outside and the neighbors cat came up to her and started meowing. My cat started meowing and now she's breathing really hard and is staring at him (he's laying on the patio near the screen). She's flapping her tail really hard. Is she scared? She keeps standing her paws up on the screen and meowing at him. Should I make him go away or are they just being friends?

Bella was spayed when she was 2 months old and Tiger (the neighbors cat) is neutered.

female cats are very defensive and i suspect she feels agitated now that the territory is being invaded. she did all those things in attempt to chase him away. the behaviour you mentioned is not what i say friendly.

Just leave them alone for right now---they've just discovered each other and are getting acquainted. As long as Bella is spayed and Tiger is neutered, these 2 will probably make great friends and "talk" to each other through the screen. My neutered male and his "girlfriend" do this quite often and it's really cute to watch. They're just fine, and they are being friendly with each other. And, just to calm your own nerves a little--your Bella is not really "freaking out". She'd really like to get out there and have a better "sniff" of Tiger. Don't let her out! She's been an indoor cat all this time, keep her that way. These 2 can "visit" through the screen very nicely.

Your cat feels like her territory is in danger and she's highly stressed. Stress in cats can cause her to spray urine around in your house in her frustration to mark her territory.

Can you talk to your neighbor and ask them to keep their cat in the house or ask them to build an outdoor enclosure to keep their cat at home?

If that's not possible, see how you can arrange your house so that your cat can't see the other cat out of the window. This may mean keeping her in another part of the house or blocking the windows some way so she can't see the other cat.

Spraying a little Feliway (do an on-line search for it) around windows and doors every day for a while may help de-stress her as well. Extra play time with you and extra lovey won't hurt either.

Cats don't like the scent of mothballs. Put a few on the ground underneath the window outside. That should keep the neighbor's cat from coming too close to the house and threatening Bella.

She's not scared. She wants to defend her territory, but the screen door is in the way, so she's frustrated. Make the other cat go home. Bella should calm down in awhile, when she realizes he's gone. After that, when you see him, shoo him away, or close the solid door, so Bella can't see him.

chase him off. the tail thing means she is hissed off at this guy invading her territory. especially if the meow is not the same tonal meow she gives you out of love. if he won't stay away after shooing him off, you might have to buy a cat repellant and spray the area or get a squirt bottle with water and give him the message to scat cat. my mom and i used to have to use glasses of water in chicago to scare away this one stray who even after being shooed, chased by us and the landlords poodle, still hung out under our window. after about a gallon one day he got the message.( he started bugging our neighbors then)

I'd chase him off. My old cat used to go sleep on the neighbors patio furnature, but It sounds like your cat is being territorial and doesn't like the other cat. Or they could just be friends, but it doesn't sound like it to me.

I would chase him off. Your cat may think the other is invading it's territory. A simple squirt of water will do.
