The very first words of the Bible are: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) This statement, that there was a beginning, is in harmony with current scientific observations. Then, according to the Bible, there was a period when the earth was “formless and waste,” uninhabited and uninhabitable. (Genesis 1:2) Geologists who try to reconstruct the early history of the earth suggest that at one time this was indeed the case. Following that, the Bible describes how seas and landmasses were formed. Plant life appeared, then sea creatures, birds, and, eventually, land animals. Finally, man himself appeared.

Before God could create the Earth, he first had to remove all that existed in its place. Then just as an artist grabs a "FORMLESS" ball of clay.
So did God to begin to create.

The word formless has at least 3 meanings and one of them is " having no physical existence" ie. it hadn't been created yet. It does not say God created a formless thing it simply says he created the world out of nothing. ;-D

It was also void "empty space" and "containing nothing." Darkness was upon the face of the deep and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. God brought the universe into existence. God created the angels before Adam and Eve. Everything that is made was made by God.

Evolution started it all way before this world was thought of, and because of it we will all one day be creators our self. Life is education. After each life we go home to prepare for the next lesson (life). We are working at building our true selves. Chipping away at building perfection in our self bit by bit. Our goal is to be a creator like our own creator in total understanding of all things and in pure love and goodness. (In order to do this we have to experience all things as our own creator did) It gets a little deeper than that as to where the very first creator came from, to make it simple everything is one big cycle and energy never ends just grows.(there is a little more to it than that, not much but here and now isn't the time)
Our creator is pure love and could never even think of killing its off spring....we have as much time as we need to build our true selves....it's up to us how long it takes.
What is truly bizarre is thinking you can do it all in one life...and if you don't do it right god will burn you..or that this was all just a fluke. There is so much to know and understand and experience.(note the many different levels of intelligence on this planet).

it's like this...."In the beginning god created heaven and the earth",,,
then he was in heaven, with his angels praising him..okey..
at that time god gave authority to the one you know who (devil ).. to rule the earth....
during that time the earth was populated by dinosaurs, dinosaurs were not created during adam and eve time .. okey... they were there even before...
maybe thats the reason it was formless (they messed it up) or it was meteor shows that destroyed them and made the earth formless.......
then god thought its time to start his master plan he had to clean up the mess.... then everything happend as you know....
now we are messing it up ... hehe.. good luck..

Similarly you would also want to ask "How come God could create all those heavenly bodies and hang them on nothing, just vacuum?" God is THE ALMIGHTY, which means nothing is impossible with Him and for Him.

And the earth was [became] without form:
without form; wasted, desolate, etc.
If you consider a gap of time between verse one and two, this works just fine.
The world was created. Some time later, it ends up in this wasted condition.
