We would normally have a cake/gathering during the afternoon. But as our co-worker will be fasting. It just doesn't seem right for us to have a cake - that he will watch us eat and then take home to eat by himself after sunset. How can we respect his beliefs but not treat him differently than other employees?

Normally, I would just ask him - but we had wanted this to be a surprise. He is more of a sub contractor and is often left out of office luncheons. He walked in on one about a month ago and looked hurt that he hadn't been included. I personally wanted to make his day special - not only because of that but because I just want to do something nice for him.

Have you tried asking the co-worker how he would like it handled? Usually if you admit that you do not know how to handle someones faith or culture, but show that you want to know and respect it, that will make a favorable impression, and hopefully show that you have respect for their belief.
Plus Muslims, like anyone else, have their own preferences. Some people like to celebrate birthdays and others do not. So you will learn not only how Muslims handle this, but what the co-worker perfers as well.

Well, I am a muslim. Some people think I am not coz I speak like an American yet I am a Malay. To my country, if you ain't malay looking enough, you ain't a Muslim. To me the best way you can celebrate is watch a movie at your place and give him a gift to show that you value him as a friend. Do something that doesn't affect the fasting month. Don't go to malls, I went there when I was fasting on my friends birthday. She was fasting too but my other pal refused to fast. We watched a movie and luckily there was a spot where not many ppl were there. I don't wanna hear crunches.

I think what your saying is fair, I mean not all of us have money to throw around.Especially if 2-3 birthdays fall in the same month. But why not have an office pool.where in everyone chips is a certain amount of money every month & cake for the co-workers birthday can be bought with that money. But if you dont want to chip in for that, you can straight away tell the people who organise such events at office ( am sure there such people even in ur office)That you are on a string budget & cant contribute to the birthday fund. Just remember what goes around, comes around, you might feel bad, if your co-workers dont do anything special for your birthday.

Fast with him. It's always nice to do with your muslim friends, and perhaps you can all get breakfast with him by sunset somewhere or just buy him his breakfast (that's in case he celebrates his b'day).

You can have a gathering after sunset, or you can all contribute and get him a birthday gift.
