i count to 8 with my steps. breathe in for 4 and out for 4. eventually it turns into 3 and 5 but same diff. for some reason that goes faster for me than thinking or anyhting.

Listen to music. It helps you to kinda put yourself in a different world. An mp3 is great to take with you, especially the ones that have the strap to put it on your arm!

Headphones and some music that motivates you. Also run somewhere other that a circular track. Nothing is more boring than running around and around the same scenery.

focus on the feelings in your body, how your bones and muscles are moving
focus on your breath.
doing "something else" is not the best idea.
focus on making your strides more efficient and your posture - spine, neck, hips, ankles.
music might be ok but don't ignore what you're doing. notice changes in the trees/plants, etc. focus on what you're doing totally.

you can listen to music from your ipod or CD player. (just make sure you aren't to involved with the music if you're on a street you want to be able to here the cars!!!)

Things to do when running? I usually spit, gasp for air and cramp up. Sometimes I trip, fall and bleed.
