When I do the slightest bit of abnormal exertion, I am really sore afterward. For instance, last night I was cutting fairly thin plastic with scissors to make something, and this morning both hands are sore. This never used to happen. Is this because I'm getting older, need to be more active, or could it be a medical problem? I am 33.

You need to talk to your physician about this problem. it could be a sign of other medical conditions. As we age we do tend to get aches and pains that we did not have in our younger years. However, if you are doing things that you have always done (using scissors, taking walks, whatever) and this activity, which is routine for you, causes pain that you did not have before, it is cause for concern. This is particularly true when ANY (literally) activity causes soreness.

I am 49 years old. I lift weights, run, ride a motorcycle, and swim. These activities do not cause me pain, even when I exert myself. These are some of my ROUTINE exertions. Make me swing a hammer for an hour and I will not be able to move my fingers for the pain. This is an UNUSUAL exertion. You have to be the judge, but if ANY exertion causes pain, call your doc.

could possibly be early onset of osteoarthritis - I started feeling it in my hands about age 40 from all the time I spend on the computer - glucosomine / condroitin supllements help a lot, but talk to your doctor first to get proper diagnosis. I am not a doctor and I don't play one on TV.

You should deffinately discuss this with your doc. Things do start to change when you get older, with your body and what not, but you seem too young to have this kind of problem. You should also talk to your spouse, they might have insights you never knew. ;0)
