What's the best place to go tent camping in NC? We live in Charlotte, and we don't want to go too far....about two hours away or less. We will be in a tent and want to go someplace where there are things to do and interesting sites to see. (fishing, waterfalls, outlooks, hiking, good food, showers)
We are going the last weekend of August, if that helps....in case there are any special events/festivals going on anywhere that would be near a good campground and worthy of attending.

Basically, we're looking for a fun, intimate, romantic, relaxing weekend in a safe, beautiful area.

If you have any suggestions please let me know! :)

The closest nice spot for camping is Lake Norman State Park. It has everything you're looking for and is only about 45 minutes from Charlotte, north on I-77.

Other interesting spots a bit further away: Blowing Rock and Asheville, up in the mountains. Google the towns and you'll get all the tourist info. This is a nice time to be up in the Appalachians.

We live in Charlotte as well and have enjoyed camping at Julian Price Park in Blowing Rock, NC. It's less than 2 hours away and has great hiking and fishing as well as some great restaurants in Blowing Rock. Only downfall is there aren't any showers there, but in the past that hasn't bothered us too much. If we get too stinky then we have driven to one of the truck stops (I know -- but it works!!) and showered there or we have brought one of those portable showers with us to use. The campsites are as private of public as you like -- hope you enjoy.

Here's a list of them. I guess a lot depends on your temporary neighbors.
