In recent years, the dogs responsible for the bulk of the homicides are pit bulls and Rottweilers:

"Studies indicate that pit bull-type dogs were involved in approximately a third of human DBRF (i.e., dog bite related fatalities) reported during the 12-year period from 1981 through1992, and Rottweilers were responsible for about half of human DBRF reported during the 4 years from 1993 through 1996....[T]he data indicate that Rottweilers and pit bull-type dogs accounted for 67% of human DBRF in the United States between 1997 and 1998. It is extremely unlikely that they accounted for anywhere near 60% of dogs in the United States during that same period and, thus, there appears to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities." (Sacks JJ, Sinclair L, Gilchrist J, Golab GC, Lockwood R. Breeds of dogs involved in fatal human attacks in the United States between 1979 and 1998. JAVMA 2000;217:836-840.)
Other breeds were also responsible for homicides, but to a much lesser extent

It is so great to get the opportunity to talk to a nieve member of todays society. I thank you for this. I mean not to be rude, I only hope I give you insight and information, I wish not to push my view. If you have done your research correctly and completely, you would realize that pit bulls are not on the top five list for dog bits, You have labs, shepherds, chows, rotties, dobies: all whcih come before pit bulls. the only reason that they seem more viscious is because people like to over breed, under socialize, and raise them to fight. The only reason they do all of this is because the jaw line extends a little higher than other breeds. They are not bourne aggressive, they are raised to be this way. maybe the bias people out there should not believe that pits should be used for fighting and such, the same way people should not be bias agianst the breed. But I thank you for giving me the chance to inform usng all facts and not opinionated veiws. Everything has mouths and teeth. Just try and be a little open minded next time. I mean I can say that blonde hair and blue eyed people need to die. But how much of a humane being can you be. You are like Hitler in a way.

Well that's only because those two are the choice breed for people who want a big mean vicious fighting dog. The ones owned by normal people never do such a thing. If all of a sudden they started fighting labs for whatever reason, I'm sure they would get a bad rap too. I use to own a pitbull but she has passed away. When I did own her, I was a little girl. She was the only one of my dogs I could play with without being hurt. My labs back then were way to hyper and constantly knocking me over and pushing me around. Now I have a rottweiler and a doberman, both of whom are total hams and afraid of our shih-tzu. You know I don't know why they don't have reports sush as these on dogs like cocker spaniels. Those things are pretty mean. My stepmom use to own them and they used to bite me, and it wasn't a nip, they actually drew blood. None of my other so called 'viscious' dogs have done that.

First of all it is not the dog breed it is the way the dogs or raised and lack of training that some owners do. If raised and trained right they are great dogs. Do some more research and you will find this out. "Pitbulls" have been everything from military dogs to service dogs. They have never turned. It has to do with breeding and training and how they are treated. If I wanted to I could make any dog mean and hateful, at the same time I have 9 dogs that all share 1 yard and 1 feeder and one of the dogs is part wolf, another is Catahula and my oldest and sweetest is an American Pitbull Terrier. She is also the laziest and the most friendly. The most offish is a lab mix.

Um.. OK some may be dangerous but It depends on how you train your dog/puppy. How the hell can you just put Why are pit bull owners delusional to the fact they are more dangerous than other dogs? All dogs are need a home it all depends on the love and training you give it . I have had a pit bull puppy before and It was always playful and nice I trained it well and as it got older it was still great. What you want everyone to do get rid of pit bulls and rottweilers? Your very stupid and have no idea what the hell your talking about. All dogs can kill and can be very dangerous not just all pits n rotts get your facts straight. If you give a dog love it will give it back.

I am so glad you brought up a report that did not mention that most of all unreported bites in the US every year are caused by Chihuahuas and Miniature Pinschers. These two breeds are responsible for more bites than the Pits, Rots, GSD's, Dobes, Danes, and Saints every year! And this report mentions Pit Bull TYPE dogs. I cant tell you how many Am Bulldog mixes, Boxer mixes, Bull Staffie mixes, and other Bullie type breed mixes get mistaken for Pit Bull Mixes every day!!!!! This is a very one sided, blind report!

Just because you are prejudiced does not mean that all Pits are bad. I would GLADLY deal with a Pit over a German Shep ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pits are true terriers and they are about the most honest dogs you will ever meet. If they like people and are friendly, they are all over you and happily greeting everyone. If they don't like people and are aggressive, you will know it just by looking at the dog's behavior. Pits are just like any other dog. They are no more dangerous than a Tosa Inu, but why didn't you bring that fact up? A 200 lbs fighting dog that if not trained properly can kill in a flash and they are becoming more and more popular as drug protection dogs in the US.

Just accept that you do not know anything about dogs in general and that you know as much about Pits as those owning Pits responsible for bites and attacks!

Small dogs can be aggressive too. You just don't hear about it. Would you report being bitten by a little Yorkie or Poodle? I own a pit and I'm not a criminal, and didn't get one because of the stigma. I love the breed and their companionship. My dog was the top dog in his obedience class and the only harm he does to people is whacking them with his tail Get a life and find something better to do with your time than to put pitbulls down, or any other breed.

It really depends on how you raise the dog. The problem is that since pit bulls already have that rep to them, a lot of there owners use them as an aggressive dog. I have 6 friends that have pits. All but one are great dogs. They play with the kids. If anything they might lick you to death. But they are real protective. The other one was raised more as a guard dog. So when new people come over he has to lock her up. Pit bulls as a breed are not necessary a bad dog. It's just that most owners don't have the discipline to raise them right.

I want to nake myself clear first...I don't own a pit bull but I have friends who do. keep in mind that more often then not it is the person who makes the dog how he is. They are often the pick of dog fighters because of their incredibly powerful jaws...and I think that that is what a lot of them are used for and to be quite honest that is why they are percived to be mean because they attack a lot out of fear. think about it. anytime they see a person walking a dog they think they are going to have to fight and then they probably see the handler and think that if I don't fight I'm going to get hurt or possibly die.
my friend owns 2 pitbulls and they are the sweetest dogs I've ever known...they come rightto you and will give you kisses until your face is dripping wet...just like any other dog. also keep in mind that other dogs can turn bad too. My pomeranian/chiuahua hates strangers cuz a stranger once shot bee bee guns at him...so naturally he growls and sometimes bites strangers. so rethink your assumption that all pit bulls are bad because it isn't the dog...it's the people.

The Pit Bull Terrier is the most misunderstood, maligned, abused and feared breed of dog. Like other breeds, Pit Bulls are social, fun loving, eager to please and trainable. Unfortunately, the Pit Bull Terrier has been targeted for the illegal sport of dog fighting. These unfortunate dogs are often routinely beaten, starved, burned, tortured — so badly abused and damaged that they must be put down. Given the prevalence of dog fighting in every major city in our country, there are still many, many good Pit Bull Terriers that are looking for a loving home. Organizations like ours and others around the country rescue the dogs that are not dangerous. When you visit our shelters, you will find some of the most affectionate, family oriented, social and fun loving dogs of any breed.

My pit is a loving and sweet dog. I wouldn't trade her for any other breed. We are educated and responsible, not disillusioned. For every study you can name, I can name more for the love of the pits.
