My husband always knew that he was Cherokee, but his father just recently obtained all the the necessary paperwork to prove this. What are the benefits of being a proven member of the Cherokee Nation?

Probably none for monetary gain-but lots of personal satisfaction just knowing. My Great Grandmother was half Cherokee. Wish I could of met her. Be proud you have the proof.

benefits.

IHS as contract care - almost free medical/dental/eye/mental
Housing ON Rez
Possible help with higher education
Per Capita dispersals of monies.
Right to sell items as "Indian made"
Free fishing / hunting license if you make under 10k per year. This license does not come with any tags or stamps. ie. salmon punch card, ocean upgrade stamp etc.
Commodity foods (not really sure it's a benefit cause it's gross)

FREE is a myth. there is no "free college, free money, free anything. the college and percapita money comes from resources the govt gets from the rez. Timber, minerals, water, etc. Nothing is FREE and not all tribes have casinos.

I have no idea. I am still looking for my proof. We know we are but can't prove it. I am a descendant of Chief Powhatan, who was Algonquian and other than the satisfaction of knowing that really cool piece of information, it gets me nothing. Heck, there is even a tribe up north for whom part of the criteria to get in is that you must be a descendant of Chief Powhatan and they won't let me in because I am not Native American enough for them.

I've heard that an allotment of land in Oklahoma would be available to the person having at least one-fourth Indian blood.
