They are usually a light gray or brown color. What is their purpose?

They are probably in-ear monitors that they can listen to themselves sing in. Or, they might be ear plugs that dampen the sound if the volume is very high, so they can protect their hearing. More likely, they are in-ear monitors for listening to what they are doing to make sure it is going out correctly. Its miserable to sing and not be able to hear what you are doing because you wind up trying to over-correct all the time which just makes things worse. I was in a band once and they weren't going to let me have a monitor. I told them that no monitor = no me and a whole lot of other people. I got my monitor. They are a necessity.

Thats a personal ear monitor. Its like the monitors you see on the stage but its in the ear. It's so you can hear yourself clearly instead of muffled so you can be certain that you are singing in key

probably earbuds like for hearing themselves sing over the crowd and other instruments. The same reason they wear headphones when recording in the studio, and the studio is quiet.EDIT: WHY did the guy a few below me get 2 thumbs up when my answer was basically the same thing. WHOEVER is giving thumbs down to all my answers get a life and grow up!
