I dont think its a case of motivation , more of personality type (i.e. strong instinct to protect or help others)
If you have motivation as a result of, e.g. Crime perpetrated on you or family member. This would probably make you deal with similar crime type in an unbalanced manner and make you unsuitable for the job. Im guessing this would show up pretty quickly in entrance evaluations).

And seriously - a "career in criminal justice" is an idiotic way to phrase becoming a police officer / lawyer etc. You have been watching to many TV college ads, or episodes of CSI

BTW suggesting that people join the police as a power trip is just showing a lack of any real understanding of the world. They wouldnt get past the entrance screening. It may be true that some officers become jaded after continued dissapointment with there career (maybe seeing people who deserve to be put away for a long time released on a technicality would have the same effect on you)

Chaz - while your friends story is very sad it would make them a poor canditate as an enforcer of the law - how could they be unbiased when dealing with a SUSPECT (i.e. not proven guilty) in a similar crime.

My intentions are to join the police here in ontario. My motivation is that I am a recent immigrant from the UK. There I saw a continuing decline in law and order, and a lack of willingness by most individuals to intervene or say what someone is doing is wrong. Unfortunately by the time I had matured enough to see things this way I was too old to join the force, and I have to be honest , I think the UK is a lost cause.
I draw attention to this exerpt from an article on the current water shortages caused by the flooding in the UK and some of the populations response:

"But troublemakers have contaminated some of the 1,000-odd drinking water bowsers deployed around Gloucestershire.

Brigadier Jolyon Jackson, who is leading the army operation in the county, said there had been two such cases.

The Sun newspaper reported that some bowsers had been contaminated with urine and bleach, while another had been drained by laughing louts within 15 minutes of its arrival in Cheltenham"

This behaviour truly sickens me and provides a firm reminder of why I left.

This is my new home and I would hate to see it go the same way. I want to make a difference. Fortunately In Canada the benefits of experience and wisdom that cannot be gained through training can be seen to balance to some extent an older entry to the police.

A couple reasons.

Some people are idealists and want to help out in their community. This they believe is the way to do so. These people are great to deal with and will only bother you if you do something wrong.

Some people out there are all about getting as much power over others and see being part of the law helps them in some ways makes them above the law. These are the ones who beat the hell out of people just because they can. People who become involved in law enforcement for this reason are what I like to call "assholes" and should be on the receiving end of a lynch mob for their own good.

Some get into it because they see it as a means to get a better pay check then what they were doing before. Some do it as a stepping stone to politics.

Edit: The same people who want to go on the force for a power trip are the same types who are willing to lie and know how to beat a psych test. It is not a very difficult thing to do. Plus I know people who join the police force for this very reason and suceeded in doing so.

Some people just want to make a difference and believe that they have what it takes to put themselves in certain situations. Others come out of the military, and like the idea of being able to get a decent career with minimal training because of their military background. A person must believe in the efforts of the police and be willing to just accept that they could get attacked, shot at, or killed, and know that having a job like this can make them a stronger person.

A childhood friend of mine was raped and stabbed to death at the age of 16. A friend of hers was with her at the time. She was brutally assaulted and left for dead. She lived to testify against the man who did this and went on to become a law enforcement officer. I would think her motivation is very obvious. She wants to get people like him off the streets!
