No, it's not just an old person's disease. Children can have it, poor little dears. There are a few different types of arthritis a person can have, so anybody can have it at any age.

Most laypeople and many doctors fail to appreciate that arthritis in children exists. For the children affected and their families, education about the condition is essential. Many children suffer for months or years before the diagnosis of arthritis is thought of and proper treatment begun. But the problem doesn't end there. Children with arthritis frequently experience difficulty because their teachers and schoolmates don't understand that children can develop arthritis. They have no idea what to expect from the child with arthritis or about the nature of the illness. As a result, when the child is finally diagnosed with arthritis, the family may be told just to put them in a wheelchair because "nothing can be done." This is entirely wrong!!

WOW! Do you feel a little better after ranting? My son is 17 and has diabetes. We've been dealing with this issue since he was 7. I say "We" because the diabetes effects the whole family. It's aggravating and makes every single thing in life just a wee bit more complicated than it has to be. Our way of venting involves participating in JDRF fundraising events and do volunteer work for them. My son also has attended diabetes summer camps to get to know others who understand his issues and concerns in life. The insulin pump has made a huge difference in my son's quality of life and we're thankful for anything that makes controlling his sugars a bit less of a hassle. Also, we've never ever tried scaring him half to death with threats of losing limbs and stuff like that. There's no reason to add terror to the equation.
