"Why dogs bark-
As the owner of four dogs, two of whom are very vocal, with a third quite willing to express himself on occasion, I can testify to the domestic dog’s ability to speak. Interestingly, while wild puppies bark, wild adult dogs rarely do, at least not to the degree our canine companions do.
Not all barks are alike
Dogs bark for various reasons. If you want to modify your dog’s barking behavior (either decrease it or increase it) it’s helpful to know what kind of barking your dog is doing, how the behavior is being reinforced, and what to do about it.
-Alert/alarm barking
-Demand barking
-Frustration/arousal barking
-Boredom barking – This is the dog who’s left out in the backyard all day, and maybe all night. Dogs are social creatures, and the backyard dog is lonely and bored. Boredom barking is often continuous, with a monotonous quality: “Ho hum, nothing else to do, I may as well just bark.” This is the kind of barking that’s most annoying to neighbors, and most likely to elicit a knock on your door from a friendly Animal Control officer."
Try to figure out which of these types of these barking actions pertains to your lab.. Then take measures to correct (if correcting is needed) or post another question with more specifics...
Hope that helped!

There are many ways to teach him not to bark, personally i wouldn't go down the shock collar / hit your dog road. Would you like someone to belt you one if you were making a sound that another person didn't like?!
Also as for shock collars maybe the people suggesting them should put it round their neck on the setting they have it on for their dog and see what it feels like!! bet they would think twice about putting it on their dog again, how can you profess to love your animal if you are hurting it , it's sick!
Anyway rant over,
Stopping your dog barking depends largely on what it's barking at or for.
Do you walk you dog regularly? if so does it get enough time off lead to burn off his energy. Labs are very energetic and clever so they need a lot of exercise and activities to keep them going stir crazy.
If your dog is barking for no apparent reason then maybe he is bored and needs something to do, try scent working with him (get a sock , hankie etc ,clean though, rub it in your hands to get your smell on it) tell him what it is? everytime he gets it right then give a treat, next step is find, put the item the other side of the room , where he can see it and tell him go find "whatever" help him at first. Build this up over a period of time, 3 x ten mins over course of the day , everyday for about a week will suffice. then you can get your dog to find different items once it's learnt them, you could play ball, catch, tag.you could teach tricks etc.
your dog could also be trying to get attention from you, so working with your dog will work wonders as it will learn that it has a job with you.
Do you shout over your dog to shut up when it barks, if so you are only making the situation worse as it thinks you are joining in the game.
If your dog is barking at the door or at strangers through the window / fence, try getting the dog into a sit and have a whole load of treats in your pocket, with the dog sitting wave a treat under its's nose andif it quietens down give it the treat and tell him good quiet, you can also incorporate a "watch me" to get the dog to look at you (have a treat where dog can see it but bring it up to about your nose height so the dog looks up and watches what you are doing with the food / treat) after a couple of seconds drop the food to the dog with a good watch / good dog command and lots of praise. And jumping up or barking whilst doing this should be ignore and told "wrong" and make sure it's all kept quiet , don't raise your voice because you need to be seen as giver of all things nice.
If you don't like any of the answers you get here please go to training classes or contact a behaviourist

When he barks completely ignore him, make no contact to him whatsoever. Do not tell him to shut up, do not even make eye contact with him. This will eventually make him correct his ways, it's a physcological thing and this is how to train your dog to stop barking continuously.

You get an Electric bark collar and you put it on him when you need him to shut up. The collar will give the dog choices and teach him by letting him decide what he should do on his own. Bark collars work on all dogs, all the time.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Learn more http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?8kW8
The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.
The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.
Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

Correct him, train him. If you want a quick fix spray apple cider vinegar in his mouth when he barks.
