Kickboxing drills are awesome for staying in shape. They are excellent for cardio. When I first started a kickboxing class it really took it out of me. I also lost weight.

IMO- martial arts' primary purpose should not be weight loss, it should be to learn how to fight and I know I would leave a school that did too much conditioning that was something that could be done on your own outside the gym/dojo/kwoon. I paid money to learn techniques, not do pushups (I know how to do a pushup and run and do sit ups, leg lifts, etc.), its not my fault others don't take things seriously and work out outside the dojo/kwoon/gym.
HOWEVER the two do go hand in hand. during class you should be getting excercise and should be getting a workout through drilling or sparring or whatever.
if you are looking at that as a source of cardio, then there is nothing wrong with that. HIIT might be the most effective cardio for weight loss, but if you never do it, then it is worthless. Doing something you will stick with is the best source of cardio or a workout for weight loss (channel surfing is not an activity).

I've seen people go from obesity to fighting fit over time, from studying martial arts. Some schools will emphasize fitness and conditioning more than others.
Tai Chi is a great exercise but don't expect to lose a lot of weight doing it. Because the moves are performed so slowly you don't really burn that many calories.

Oh yeah, martial arts is a great workout, it hits so many aspects and isn't just limited to a leg workout like running, cycling, or treadmilling. You're always moving in martial arts. Kickboxing / Thai Boxing burns a whole lot of calories.
Thai pads are great for muscular endurance - hard, but interesting enough you won't bore from it when you're fatigued.

Any martial art can do this, but you have to do more than just whatever you do in class in order to make it happen. If you spend an hour a day a few days a week just doing kata you will get a good cardio workout.

Keichu Do Karate is really good. Just make sure the dojo teaches Keichu Do NOT Keichu Ryu. Keichu Do is an American Martial Art that is based on Karate, Judo and Ju-Jujitsu.

I started Muay Thai and lost 20 pounds in about 3 months. The kicker is that I wasn't overweight to begin with. Kickboxing is a great cardio exercise that also helps build self confidence.

That is one of my reasons (the exercise part). Of course, there are other reasons as well.
I don't have a favorite martial art... I haven't practiced more than one martial art. ^_^
(I want to, though.)
