god, I really believed in god when I was a kid but I sort of grew out of it, eventually I realised there is no god, don't remember how

Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, The Tooth Fairy, God.. You know the usual..

My deranged older brother told me Santa, The Bunny and The Fairy were really Mom and Dad when I was 6.. (I cut off half of his hair and painted his face with food coloring dye while he slept... I think that makes us about even...) Some of you might question the deranged part I have proof he is now an attorney if that's not deranged what is...

I figured out god wasn't real by reading the bible and using my brain.. The bible is filled with contridictions and impossible fairy tales.. The messages are mixed and are clearly designed by man as a means to control man..

When I was 5 I was sure if I wished hard enough and thought hard enough I could turn my little sister (Then age 3) into a pony.. But alas she is still human...I was able to teach her to neigh instead of speaking much to my parents dismay ... It's amazing the lengths little girls will go to in order to get a pony... :)

As a child I believed my parents were invincible and that they could protect me from anything. I now know that they are not invincible because I see them ageing before my eyes.
(I haven't figured the rest out yet. But I'll be back. I'm not lazy Mr Unpope. Just a bit out of my depth. :) I like this question better though.
I also believed that justice always prevails, that people always do the right thing, that every thing is as it seems and that truth is the same as perception. These have all been hard lessons to learn. And I still sometimes forget.
ches i love your answer.

I used to actually be afraid that I was going to be punished by god every time I committed a so-called "sin". I truly was scared and I would I actually pray and ask for forgiveness and try to abstain from stuff. It's embarrassing to admit. I was never a goody two shoes, but I did go to church up till I was in 7th grade. So much wasted time.
How I figured out that this religious **** was not true? Well I can't really pinpoint how or when exactly, I'm just glad I'm no longer trapped in it.

If you had asked which things I still believe in since childhood, you would have a much shorter list. A combination of life experiences, maturation, education, the opportunity to learn critical thinking skills (and let's credit living in a society that is open and can afford a lot of leisure time) are the factors that, to this day, keep me learning new things and revising or discarding the old.

Good question.

The usual... Santa... Easter Bunny... Tooth Fairy... God.

It's funny, though... one of my first childhood memories is asking my father: "Daddy... what holds the sky up?"

I remember that he was nonplussed by the question... but, to his credit, he explained that it just LOOKED like the sky was a 'thing'... but it really wasn't... rather, it was an illusion caused by the way the sun lit-up the air. This is when I first began to realize... "Ahhh... all is not as it seems." Dad... to his credit... did not resort to the "God holds the sky up" explanation.

Anyway... in later years... I realized that my childish question actually provided a key insight into how and why the idea of 'gods' first originated.

The first thing that came to mind was when I was a very young child, possibly at the age of three or four even. I didn't believe women released a pungent gas from their anus, that belief was shattered when a woman did in fact do this.

Santa Claus -- One year, I wanted to buy my sister some Magic Markers as a Christmas present; but my mother told me not to, saying, "Somebody else already got it for her." Sure enough, come December 25th, what should Cyndi find in her stocking, but some coloring pens from -- you guessed it -- Santa!

Once that one was ruined for me, the rest of the imaginary holiday characters -- the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, etc., all came tumbling down like so many dominoes....

Ok this is funny. When I was a kid I believed our bodies was made up of sacks inside, and those sacks hanged from our ribs. So if you ate mashed potatoes it went into the mashed potatoes sack. If you swolled your gum it went into the gum sack. I found out this was wrong when I started looking at Health books my mom had.
