Linux is a version of the Unix operating system. About like XP is a version of the Windows operating system.

Unix is an "open source" program, meaning that no one holds the copyright on the program. So anyone can develop a version of the Unix system. Linux was developed by Linus Torvalds in 1991. (Thus the name combines Linus and Unix to create Linux).

Because it is distributed for free, it has become a popular alternative to the Windows Operating system. It is also the most popular version of Unix for non-business usage.

There are multiple versions of the Linux program, made by different companies. While all versions of Linux uses the same kernal (the main program), they add different interfaces (desktop), applications, utilities, etc. REd Hat, and Susi are two of the most popular.

Linux uses the penguin "Tux" as it symbol.

Unix was a proprietary operating system developed as early as the 70's. It and Linux are pretty much the same thing except Linux is much more built up since Linux is GPL (open-sourced).

In theory SCO own Unix and they have tried to prove that in court. There are other Unix brands that you have to pay to use like IBMs AIX Unix and Hewlett Packard's HP-UX.
