So, my dog has an appointment to be spayed in two hours and I totally forgot all about it. She has been in contact with food and though I was sleeping and didnt see her eat, I am sure she has. I am assuming that I will have to reschedule her appointment. Has anyone else done this and did you have to reschedule? I can't bellieve I did this, I feel so stupid!

I actually sat upright in bed at 4 am realizing what I had done (slaps myself in the forhead) but she is away from food now and I will call as soon as they open.

The vet said it shouldn't be a problem and they will spay her last, thanks for all the info.

Yes I have done this before. Pick the food bowl up if you haven't already done so. When you call the vet let them know what happened and tell them when you removed the food. You still have a few hours and sometimes the vets can rearrange the surgery order to do her last to give the possible food more time to clear her system. Some vets are very strict through and may require that you reschedule which is fine since this is also in the best interest of your dog. Anestesia can upset their stomachs and cause vomiting this is why the removal of food is important.
But really don't feel to stupid alot more people do this than you would think. Some people don't even tell that the pet had food and we would find out later because the dog/cat would vomit.
Good Luck

I would call your vet and advise of what has happened. You will probably have to reschedule. Better safe than sorry. However if the vet does surgery late in the day he may decide to do your dog last, but be prepared for a possible overnight stay.
I have had rescue dogs and cats that have needed emergency surgery that have or may have eaten, but surgery has had to go ahead. Same with animals who have been in accidents, but for safeties sake I myself if it were for something like a spay/neuter I would just set up the nearest appointment possible to assure my animals well-being.
Hey we all make mistakes like this. I had 2 dogs have surgery last week. I too woke in in the middle of the night and thought I had left food down. Thankfully I hadn't.

Definately RESCHEDULE! Don't feel bad. I just had my German Shepherd Spayed on Monday. I didn't have to reschedule, and I did cut the food off 14 hours before, but, you don't want your dog risking Aspirating (Vomiting then ingesting food and stomach contents into lungs) during surgery either.
Also; dogs tend to lose control of their bodily functions during surgery, and, not a mess you want to have around an open surgical inscision to the abdomen. Plus, once again, it is fairly common that when your dog is coming out of being under anesthesia, they often will vomit anyway, and, your dog could still aspirate while in a holding pen.
Your Vet will understand much like most of us do. It's good that you thought of this, and, don't be hard on yourself. As "dumb" as you may feel, you showed you are much more smart by being concerned about this.
Good luck when she does have the procedure. I hope all goes well.

First of all, It's OK. You are not the first person to forget a vet appointment - and you certainly will not be the last.
Take her food away for the time being. Then call the vet in the morning and explain what happened. Yes, chances are she will want to reschedule your appointment for another time.
These things happen - kick yourself in the butt for being forgetful.

The vet wont do surgery if they had something to eat. You need to call the vet and reschedule. This is very important that the vet knows she may have had something to eat. Dont feel stupid, just make the phone call. Things happen and people forget stuff. Dont worry about it.

Anesthesia usually cannot be done if an animal has eaten. Same thing for humans undergoing surgery.
When you call, ask if she needs to be rescheduled. Don't assume. Next time, I recommend you do what I did.... take her in the night before so THEY are caring for her and that makes it much easier.

I would reschedule . She could aspirate during the surgery . I would not want to take that chance . Next time pick the food and water bowl up before you go to bed .

Call your vet and ask, but you'll probably have to reschedule. The reason that they don't want them to eat is because it can cause them to vomit when the come off the anestesia.

Call the vet to check, but I fear you will have to reschedule. Mark it on your calendar or put it in your mobile phone next time!
