In the UK you will have to pass the entrance tests. If you can pass these then your experience with the forces will go in your favour. You will be well disciplined and no doubt will have plenty of common sense which is vital to a police officer.

Like you I was in the forces and this did me the world of good and has stood me in good stead throughout my police career so far. Again like you I had to give notice before I applied, which can be daunting, but make sure that you prepare thoroughly.

Despite what some people say the police is still a great career. Once you establish yourself there are plenty of opportunities to diversify into other specialist departments. Yes there is a lot of red tape which can be a hinderence but you have to make the most of it.

Good luck with your application. We are in need of more good coppers.

Qualifying will depend on the agency you apply to. Each agency has different qualifications for employment. Some require Bachelor Degrees now. Most will have a minimum of 60 college credits, Associates Degree, 2 years prior military or 5 years previous full-time LE experience. If you have 12 years and are getting an Honorable Discharge, you should be fine there. Most agencies will take people up to 40 years old with no previous LE experience (over 40 with 5 or more years LE experience).

Good luck, but yeah, the pay sucks. But sometimes, it isn't about the money. I left a cushy $65K a year Federal Security job to go back to full-time patrol Deputy. I enjoy going to work again and that happiness couldn't be bought for the extra $30K.

You are totally qualified. The first thing you'll do is take an entry examination and then have a live interview. Then if you pass the test, and accepted into the program, you go through a rigorous background check. If you pass that, then you are good to go. Most likely a job offer will follow and you will be off to police academy in no time. Good luck.

Being exmilitary is a plus of course. But as another said most require at least some college. And at some point even if you get in getting promoted will require it at some point. Or what happens if you want to transfer to something else that requires one? I suppose if you were an MP for 12 years they might waive it but you will need it at some point.

Why not stay in for a bit more so the military can pay for college? I guess much of this depends on your age. If you are young why not stick it out for 8 more years, get a degree and work for whom you wish... especially at the federal level. 8 years for retirement and benefits for life? I know a lot of guys who got out at around 12 and say "damn, I should have stuck it out after investing that much time".

i don't work for the police but I am sure you will have to start on the basic level like all the probationers who start every week.

the police don't get on with anyone outside their 'supreme' status therefore I doubt that you will have an easy time fitting in.

Why don't you do something else or just have a break for a while. Writing all those letters to your penpals from the sun newspaper must have been exhausting for 12 years....

Great chances for acceptance, as long as you have a clean record and haven't habitually used drugs. Good luck!

I don't think you would have much of a problem. Most cities are having trouble recruiting officers. Military exp. is a plus.
