Technology has assisted in the prevention of skin cancer in a number of ways:

(1) Improved understanding of the causes of skin cancer
- particularly childhood sun exposure and particularly sun-burn damage

(2) Increased public awareness of skin cancer as a health issue
- "slip slop slap" campaign in Australia urging the public to slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat
- patients presenting to doctors earlier allowing earlier diagnoses

(3) Better sun protection technology
- Improved sun screens - now SPF 30+ and I have seen some claiming to be SPF 60+ ... also make up with incorporated sun screen
- sun protective clothing

(4) Better early detection
- Local Doctor awareness, skin lesion surveillance
- Dermatoscopy
- Improved early referral and definitive treatment (surgical excision)
