If you are here for less than three months, your UK licence is all you need. You do not need an international licence. That is really for people whose licences are in a language other than English.

If you are here for more than three months, you will need an Australian licence. These are State or Territory based and there are a few differences from State to State. You will probably not have to do a practical test but that depends on the local rules. Check with the local authority in the State where you are. In NSW it is the RTA, the Roads and Traffic Authority.

Uk Driving Licence In Australia

Driving in Australia Permanent Resident A Permanent Resident is normally allowed to drive for 3 months before needing an Australian Licence, after that period they would be classed as driving without a valid licence. Visitors A person on a Visitors Visa does not have to abide by the same rules, and would be allowed to drive a private vehicle on a valid CURRENT driving licence from their own country, for as long as they have a valid visitors visa. Visiting motorists are required to carry their licence (and English translation if applicable) at all times while driving and produce it to Police on request. Production of their temporary visas may also be required as evidence of their temporary residential status. Every car that is registered has compulsory Third Party Insurance included, but this only covers injury to people, NOT to property. You can drive with just this cover, but more cover is advised, in case you damage another persons car. International Driving Permits British Licence holders can ignore any references to "International Driving Permits (IDP)", as these are not required for driving licences in the English language. They are required when your normal licence is in a different language, and must accompany your VALID National licence. An IDP is NOT a licence in itself, but effectively just a Translation of your licence. This is a quote from a State Gov website: "If your overseas licence is not in English, it is advisable to carry an International Driving Permit or an approved English translation of your licence (if you have either of these) with you when you drive"

It is for tourists. If you are intending to reside in Australia for more than a year then I believe you need to get an Australian licence.

I would suggest that you have an international license which covers you for twelve months, and by having that, if you have a stop over on the way over and on the way back to the UK, you will not have any problems at all.

It certainly is. I used mine to hire a car when I was over there and had no problems at all. Plus they very conveniently drive on the left side of the road, which makes life easier!
