Try acrylic paint with roller. Sometimes we prime canvas with that but make sure you use full strength. If you are doing oil painting I don't think it will work very well although there is nothing in the rule book said that it would work. The alternative is to buy craft paint. They are very cheap ($1 per pint) but they are not very thick. So you don't want to mix with water when using it.

What kind of house paint nd what are you mixing it with?

If you don't mix spirits and water soluble paint you should be fine. It may however interfere with drying and your colors may change when dried. House paint isn't the same quality as artist paint. Try it on some test canvas before doing it to see the changes you will get.
