It is an automatic transmission and the button for overdrive is located on the handle of (the thing that changes the car from park to reverse to drive) the gear changer.
Any ways, there is a light on my dash however the light highlights the display on my dash that says o/d off,
so when the light is on is the overdrive off? or is when the light off is the over drive off. (The only reason I ask is it seems like a double negative.) I just bought the car and do not have the user manual. Is there a way to tell by engine rev sound or rpm or ???? Thanks.

Overdrive off light on is correct! The engine will only up shift three times turn OD on light off and the trans shifts up one more time into 4th gear. All for fuel milage you can turn the light on around town and in stop and go traffic. Torque converter lock up also happens in third and forth gear. That converter lock up accounts for approx 500 rpm drop in 3rd or 4th gear at cruise. And can be turned on and off by lighting the brake lights.

When the light is off then the overdrive is engaged and you have four gears, in other words everything is normal. When the light is on it says "overdrive off". This means that the overdrive is turned off and now you only have 3 gears. It is useful to have the overdrive off when driving up hills or on slippery roads, also used when pulling a trailer.

your O.D is normally on when you start your car, the button you push disables the OD, so when the light is on, your overdive is disabled, you can prove this by takeing it for a drive, haveing someone with you watch the tachomter if you have on, each time the trans changes to another gear the rpm's will drop, just count the times the rpm's drop, and thats how many gear changes you had, 1 to 2...2 to 3...3 to 4, then lock up.
or just listen to your engine if you dont have a tach, you will hear the rpm's fall with each shift.
