I'm curious whether or not I would need a special visa or a work permit if I wanted to get a simple job in Australia and live there over the summer (my winter).

Is it possible just to travel there, get a summer job, and leave?

You will need a temporary working visa. Here's the web address for the embassy (consulate offices can't issue working visas). Make sure you have your passport done first. http://www.usa.embassy.gov.au/

yea they would unless you work off the books...its not worth the hassle as you can get deported for not following the rules of the visa you have. thats why they call them STUDENT visas ok. i looked into emigrating years ago and thats the way it is.
