We just returned from Oahu, and while we did not try this activity, my cousin, who conducts marine life research there, works with one of the companies that offers "swimming with sharks." He highly recommended this activity and said that it's done very well under extremely controlled circumstances. You are lowered into the water inside a cage and the sharks swim around the cage. We didn't try it this time as we have younger kids, but like I said, my cousin couldn't say enough good things about the program and how it's done.

I went on this adventure with North Shore Shark Adventures just a few weeks ago and highly recommend it. You are in a cage so there's no real chance of getting eaten. There were about 8 sharks swimming around us ranging from 3 to 8 feet long. The sharks know the sound of the boat and know it's feeding time. When they hear it they come up from the deep looking for a meal. They are very calm and more interested in the food being thrown in the water than trying to get a bite out of your arm. This is a definate don't miss when on the north shore.

Never swam the north shore, but I kicked a shark while swimming at Bellows beach about 30 years ago. Yeah, that's the same beach where a tourist was recently bitten.
Unless you're experienced at swimming with sharks, or are going to have a dive buddy with proper training along, I would NOT recommend it. While some sharks are somewhat docile, it takes experience and know-how to figure out which ones are which. It's not worth the risk just for a thrill. Remember to them we are just a large buffet!
When I kicked a shark, way back when, not only was I a kid but it was a total accident. I didn't even know it was there until I turned to see what I kicked, and saw it turning away from me.

Not in Oahu, but I did swim with sharks in Oman and yes, I would recommend it. The sharks were only a few feet long and there was so much else for them to eat apart from us, that they just ignored us. The Omani's thought we Brits were mad but that's where we all went at the weekends.

I have not been swimming with sharks but I wouldn't recommend it. Especially since there have been a number of shark attacks of lot around the islands......why would you want to put yourself in harms' way!?! Especially not now since the owner of the shark experience died recently (not from sharks but from a base jumping accident)......

Good luck with your decision!

The waves are pretty rough on the North Shore so the beaches are mainly for surfing.

i personally have been in the water when there was a shark there! we were at the beach near Waimea (sp?) (where people jump off that cliff) and as i was basking under the sun, i heard people say "shark!!" i was like where, so i went into the water and saw what looked like a baby 5 feet shark chasing a turtle. i got in but the shark just get disappearing and then we saw it again and i tried following it etc. people were like to me "shark! get out of the water" and i was like "who cares!" it was fun, you should try it but do stay in the shallow area (waist deep) in case you need to get out quick!
