The "baby boom" was caused by several things- Men returning home from the war finally had access to education, thus the ability to support a family, with the wife able to stay home and look after the kids.
Also, people wanted something comfortable and secure, not unlike the "mini boom" seen after 9-11.

The baby boom can be pinned on a few things. The most obvious, the war. Imagine being a GI in the war and seeing all the horrors of war, but making it through. If you were in their shoes wouldn't you want to fully enjoy life when you got home? Get married, carry on your family name, live the "American dream" (which was a huge part of the 50s and you may want to read up on that since it can definitely give you further insight on the BB). Also keep in mind, during that era, it was unorthodox to be married and not have children. If you were married, you had kids, plain and simple, much like how divorce wasn't accepted either.
Another reason was the great depression. Before the war it would have been really hard to have kids. People were broke, America was struggling and having a kid at this time would have near impossible.

Hope this helps!
My grandpa was a WWII hero and my mother is baby boomer (along with her younger brother) :)

I think the counter argument you will run into with your argument is that it assumes a fixed number of jobs. I think many will argue that more people working, earning more money expands the economy and should create more jobs. I personally see no reason why women shouldn't work, but if I were to argue it, I'd argue in on the value of having a full-time parent. I think there is some good statistical information out there showing the benefits of having a stay at home mom. You could look at a typical scenario in which the wife often makes less and take a look at what that really means in after tax income for the family and how that small amount compares the value of raising kids. Another argument could be that women are statistically much more likely to take maternity leave and quit sooner, so from an efficiency standpoint, employers are better off going with a demographic that is more likely to stay late, work weekends, not take parental leave and stay with the company longer. ~

Don't have any references for you, but common sense will tell you that the cause for that particular boom is the same as any post-war baby boom. The vets came home and had a lot of sex after being away from their wives for so long. You'll see the same thing after the deployed guys get back from the current war.

As for occupied Europe, the reasons seem obvious:

- a curfew imposed by the Germans

- a severe rationing of coal and petrol

So what is one supposed to do when you're not allowed to go out and it's not possible to heat your own house...

1. men came home
2. women lost their jobs and got married
3. birth control wasn't socially acceptable.
4. women were socially pressured to have many children

For an example I'll mention my grandmother (married in 1938) who had 13 children opposed to her mother (married in1914) who only had 3. My own mother was married in 1968 and only had 2 children. You can see this trend in many American families, that couples whose fertile years fell into the post WW2 era had many more children then other generations.

After being demobbed, then men and women who fought in WW2 returned home to resume their lives and try to return to some sort of normalcy. So, husbands. wives returned to their spouses, sweethearts reunited and married and so after a wilderness of 6 years in which the figures would have been very low, it's no surprise that many babies were born from 1946.
