Genesis 1:5 cleary says that a "day" in the 7 days of creation is actually a 24-hour day, so why is that some
christians say that the each day in the 7 days of creation is not a 24-hour day?

Genesis1:5 "And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day."

This verse is pretty clear! For you who don't understand; as long as the light is there it is called day(12 hours) and as long as dark is there it is called night(12 hours). Christians should really entirely stick to what they believe and stand by that! They can't cherry pick and say they believe in some parts of the bible literally and some parts figuratetively! Either take the bible as it is or don't take it at all!

ok i ask you a question if God created the earth in seven days or a 156 hour duration like you said i will disprove that

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1
King James Version

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Genesis 1:2

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Genesis 1:3

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

Genesis 1:4

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Genesis 1:5

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

Genesis 1:6

And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

Genesis 1:7
King James Version

And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Genesis 1:8
King James Version

"And the evening and the morning were the first day and second day." are you sure it was a 24 hour period?.

to cut the story short God can make the earth in a span billion of years
because he is eternal and he's not going to be bored.

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

II Peter 3:8

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

this is the start of the 24 hour period or what you call an earth day.

And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth ,

Genesis 1:17
King James Version

And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:18
King James Version

And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

Genesis 1:19
King James Version

God set firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth at the fourth day. that the time that the earth has the literal 24 hour period.

You forgot to mention that we had the first, second, and third day before there was a sun, so how do we know what a day is without sunset and sunrise. And that man wasn't created until the sixth day, so we don't have any eyewitnesses to the first five anyway. And that Adam also named all of the animals in one day, while still having time for God to sedate him and make Eve out of one of his ribs.

But seriously...

Most Christians do take the 6 days literally. Those that don't are usually criticized by the church as a whole. But remember, the church also called Galileo a heretic because he said that the earth was not the center of the universe.

The first chapter of Genesis is not structured like the rest of the book. It is actually formatted more like a fantasy, where the rest is formatted more like a historic account. There's some passages in Hebrews that some say suggest that the day not need be taken literally. But an all-powerful God should have no problem creating the universe in 6 days, so I don't see why any Christian would need to read it as metaphorical.

I don't know why you say we are disproven. I have believed what you are saying for as long as I've been a Christian. The reason some Christians dispute the 24 hour day cycle of creation is that as children they were bombarded with the secular belief taught as fact in public schools that earth "banged" into existence BILLIONS of years ago. Then they try to combine that belief with what is clearly stated in the Bible. I have argued this exact point with believers and unbelievers alike. The universe as we know it was created in six 24 hour periods. God is pretty awesome, I don't think He needs billions of years to do anything.

Yoohoo..buddy. Christians are people too. Many of us, not me..but others, are just as ignorant on various points of the Bible as any non-believer might be. Maybe more. You see, the problem isn't with what the Bible offers as truth, but what a person is willing to trust as truth. It is so strange and difficult to wrap any level of intellect around the concept of creation...because the magnitude of power involved in bringing it all about is overwhelming on so many levels, time, matter, space, elements, configuration...life itself, energy. Yet, some of the key answers are right there plain as day and they are missed. Take for instance the fact that "light" was created before "day". God follows His own laws. Before a day could be there had to be "light". Even before the Sun. Ya see. The natural phylum of creatures each after its own kind. Mammels, birds, reptiles and fish. The fact that no one thing came before another...the land had to emerge before it could be vegitated...all things were fed with dew and springs..there was no rain..but a perfect canopy probably somewhat like a rain forest and all the land was gathered into one place. So if you really want to see just how powerful God is, and most Christians, being simple minded average people who go about day to day doing the best they can struggling to maintain faith without the food of understanding, concieve of all the different animals, the simple cell, a venus fly trap, dolphins, spider webs, honey, the mud dobber wasp, the solor system and the moon and you will see that as God has said..."be still and know that I AM God." He is asking us, as the Sabbath calls for, that we take a look around and then possibly come to the conclusion..sense He created all this, maintains it, manages it and keeps it together...then why wouldn't He consider me and be keenly interested in my little drop in the bucket life? I may be confused a but there is one thing that I know...He is not confused about me. Dude, He knows the number of hairs on my head...blows my mind. So yeah..I can see why Christains try to associate human reasoning in the natural world with God's abilities and so forth. Its easy to do and it keeps us from having to think because with God...every question answered just explodes into more questions. If you are out to "disprove" christains...your goal is a futile one...christians don't prove or disprove anything and cannot be proved or disproved...A christian is a person first and a person of faith second. Add in all the human faults and misunderstanding and you will see why when something of the Bible doesn't make sense...they most often apply their own understanding. Its human nature. I'd rather them take something from the Bible..any little bit than nothing at all...His Word has something for everyone. Love in Christ, ~J~

Literature like the bible and the koran, for examples, are guides to how to survive in a desert environment. That is the reason for the proscription against pork, for instance. Without technology to protect it, pork spoils and produces fatal bacterial illness very quickly, ergo the proscription. The bible, taken as a continuing document (old and new testament), suggests people get along with each other. Perhaps you are suggesting we shouldn't "cherry pick" that, either? Or perhaps you are just suggesting it would or would not be appropriate to cut off the head of the guy that cut off Daniel Pearl's head, per the old testament? Where are you "cherry picking" from? I would venture to guess that you are picking as serves you - not a problem, all humans do that - or perhaps you are not human?

any knowledgeable person would know that the bible isn't perfect since it was written by man.

and if you don't believe in God and the Bible,
why are you wasting time going through verses?

I mean, if I don't believe in a 8 legged pink elephant with magical powers..
why would I waste my time reading a huge book to try and find something contradicting to it?

People complain that religion destroys the world,
but you sit there in front of your monitor
thinking of things to say to a life that is far from yours;
doing nothing to help anyone.

hmm..

just saying.

What makes you think that light and darkness last 12 hours each??? In the arctic summer it never gets dark for months and in the winter it stays dark for months. So maybe we call that a day?

They like to try to wiggle. By making outlandish claims they think they can change what their bible says enough for it to still stand. They do not even realize that they are committing the biggest sin according to their religion when they do it.
It is a side effect of the cognitive dissonance created when they try to compare their belief system to reality.

The Bible also says that time is different for God. It states that a thousand years is as a day for him.

You have not "disproven" a thing.

I do understand, but thanks so much for asking.

YES, I can pick what is literal and what is not. Part of the Bible is allegory.

When John the Baptist sees Jesus, he says, "Behold! The Lamb of God." That is clearly not meant to be taken literally. Jesus was a man....not a lamb.

YOU have been "disproven."

Have a good day!
