Nobody's been fooled. We all want stuff, but want it to be inexpensive. Manufacturers have to find a way to keep the costs down, so they use overseas labor and the cheapest materials. They are supplying us with the stuff we demand ... cheap stuff.

This applies to just about everything today, not just cameras. Years ago I actually had a blender repaired. Today, it's cheaper to throw out and buy new than it is to repair. We are in a disposable society and it's going to become a problem soon because the next generation will never think of the possibility of repairing things.

BTW - I have an 6-year-old Fuji 2.1MP camera that works just fine and I'm finally considering selling it.

Unfortunately, with "new improved" coming out daily and "costs more to repair than to replace" being our mantra, most of today's technology has become disposable.

Even the stoutest metal case hides plastic gears and parts within. And most devices aren't designed to be taken apart, even by experts.

It's a sad statement on our society.

No! If you take care of it, it won't break. I don't know who told you they're "only designed to last 2-3 years." If you take care of a good one I'll be it would last a while. It's just that the technology is still evolving so they'll be obsolete before they break anyway.
