I am flying to Korea next week. The total airtime for the longest portion of the trip will be about 12 hours. I would like to sleep for at least 4-5 of those hours so I won't have to eat my own foot due to lack of entertainment and severe boredom. I have heard a nice strong shot of whiskey will do it. But I am not so sure how I would do being drunk in a kindergarten style chair the airline industry calls a "seat". Can anyone who has some experience in this field recommend a sleeping aid that will knock me out for a few hours but won't make me feel disgusting when I wake up? I would prefer it to be OTC.

And if you also know any tricks on avoiding jet lag- throw some of those in too.

Sleeping aids:

avoid the alcohol - it will relax you but it is also a diuretic, so you are likely to become a little more dehydrated. The aircraft cabin is already very dry, so it will also be dehydrating you.

For long flights, I carry an inflatable neck pillow, ear plugs and an eye mask. The neck pillow makes sure your head does not flop around, and the ear plugs and eye mask reduce the disturbances.

My approach to jet lag for long flights is to start by resetting my watch to the local time of my destination when I board, and start doing similar things as I would if I were already there. So I don't have a big meal at midnight just because the airlines serves one, or watch movies until four o'clock in the morning, etc. And I try and sleep at about the same time as I normally would. Then, when I arrive, I maintain that routine.

I usually have pretty good success with Tylenol PM.

Don't drink alcohol; it will just dehydrate you and you'll wake up with a headache.

The best way I've found to deal with jet lag is to adjust my internal clock to the destination time over a series of days. To go east, try going to bed later and later; for the return journey--if possible--go to bed earlier and earlier.

I've also had success with a product called, reasonably, No Jet Lag. It's a homeopathic pill that you take during the flight.

And when you get to your destination, fight the temptation to take a nap. Stay up until it's bedtime there, and get lots of light during the day.

Just tough it out. Its just like taking a nap during the day. You don't really need the drug and if you stay natural it will help you with your Jet lag. Jet lag has lots to do with dehydration. Don't get into the booze to hard and drink lots of water. When you get to your destination force yourself on to their time. No naps. If you take naps you just prolong your acclimatization. Also. I find going east to west to be easier for me. Don't know why. good luck!
