I want to get a tattoo of my family crest but I don't know where to look. I don't really trust most places online and if I am getting something permanent like a tattoo I don't want it to be wrong. Does anyone know where to go to look for their genealogy

I want to get a tattoo of my family crest but I don't know where to look. I don't really trust most places online and if I am getting something permanent like a tattoo I don't want it to be wrong. Does anyone know where to go to look for their genealogy. My last name is Ziemba so it tends not to be on websites because it is uncommon.

The surname product business is a scam. don't be taken in. To begin with a crest is merely part of a coat of arms. Surname product peddlers frequently call a full achievement of arms a crest. Coats of arms were granted to individual men not families. Now in continental countries they frequently were assumed by wealthy merchants and even farmers. However you would have to do the research to find out even if you have an ancestor that was every granted or he assumed a coat of arms and then find out the rules of heraldry for that country and if you are permitted to use it. If you actually have an ancestor that was ever granted a coat of arms it would not come from Mexico but go back to Spain. Mexico didn't grant coats of arms. Let me tell you if you see a coat of arms with a surname on a scroll underneath you can be pretty darn sure if is one that was bought from a surname product peddler. Coats of arms that have been legitimately granted, assumed or inherited will not have a surname on a scroll underneath of over it. Many were granted or assumed before people had surnames. A lot of the junk those peddlers sell you can buy at a Stuckey's. It is very likely not everyone named Carrillo in Mexico shares the same ancestor. When surnames were assigned or taken in Europe during the last millennium it wasn't impossible for legitimate sons of the same man to wind up with a different surname and still each could have shared his with others with no known relationship. The purpose originally was not to identify a man as a member of a family but just to better identify him, frequently for taxation purposes. Too many men with the same given name in the same town or village and they had to have a way of sorting them out.

I know a lot of families, Scottish clans in particular, tend to have an organized society set up. In essence, try looking up "blah family history" or "blah family society." My Scottish clan has it's own society, and I would think a lot of those old Eurpoean families, the ones that had crests and such at least, would be somewhat organized or at very least have some information on your family history which often includes a crest.

Coats of arms were granted to individuals, not families. Most of the people who were granted coats of arms were wealthy. Not all people had a coat of arms so there's a good chance that nobody from your family had one.
