My cat is 11 mos. old. She has had diarrhea with occasional blood her whole life. She has gotten on special food for this and had numerous trips to the vet, but the problem prevails. My concern is, now, she is starting to vomit...sometimes up to 6 times a day. Usually it is just a liquid, tan in color. She also mopes around more than usual. I am very worried about her. She went to the vet yesterday and checked out "just fine". They did send her home with an antibiotic (which she hates! chicken flavored, yeah, right). Anywho, she has already vomited 3 times tonight and I just don't know what to do or think. I very rarely see hair in her puke. I do see the occasional blade or two of grass. Mostly, it's just tan liquid though. Any thoughts?

UPDATE: I took Kirby to another vet today since that seemed to be the general consensus. They think she has inflammatory bowel disease and gave her a shot of cortisone. If that's the case, she should improve by tomorrow. If not, then we go back for some lab work. Thanks so much for everyone's advise!

My first thought would be that you need to see a different vet. This is not to say that the current vet isn't good at his job, but he may be missing something. Try a large clinic. It may be more expensive, but there will be several vets there to offer a diagnosis.

Good luck.

If she goes outside she may be contacting something that is causing her problem. If someone has just treated their lawn with chemicals and the cat eats some of that grass, it could be the cause. You never know what they can get into. While she is ill, please keep her inside and see if she improves. As far as the antibiotic is concerned, maybe she'd take it if it was in some canned cat food chicken. Sometimes we need to be sneaky. If you're not satisfied with the advice you've gotten from your current vet, it might be a good idea to get a second opinion. I hope your kitty is well soon.

I would try giving her a couple of teaspoonsful of plain, unsweetend yogurt everyday ( not diet or fat free yogurt),and also vanilla Danactive, which will help to replace the "good" bacteria in her gut. Also, ask your vet to prescribe something for acid reflux disease, which is what it sounds like, and Centrine, which is for vomiting and diarrhea.I had a little cat who had inflammatory bowel disease for her entire life, and she took this everyday for the last two years of her life, along with Metronidazole. She lived to be almost 15,and never weighed more than 5 lbs.but she did live! I have also heard that Tylan, which is used for poultry,is good for cats with chronic diarrhea. It's all trial and error with cats like these.Keep trying different foods until you find one that agrees with her. Also, try a boiled chicken ( white meat, skinless, boneless )and rice diet for a week, and see if that helps, then slowly introduce one plain food at a time ( like lamb.) Strained baby food meat also helps to tame the tummy. Not the dinners, but just the plain meat type baby food.Good luck, and I hope your cat feels better, poor thing.

I would take her to another vet for a second opinion. Has she had blood work done? What about being checked for parasites? X-rays in case of blockage?
