delete unnecessary files like personal pictures, music, and the by. using a disc optimizer would help, as well. uninstalling programs you don't use helps.
if you want to know how much space on your HD is free, just double click My Computer from your desktop and click your C drive (or whichever is your default drive). it should tell you what amount of space is free on the left hand side of the window or on the status bar if not shown on the left hand side.

Another thing you can do is get another drive for storage. Hard drives, both internal and external, have come way down in price. I have a 500 GB USB external hard disk drive that I use to store all my music/videos. It cost about $130. (maybe even cheaper now) It just plugs right into your USB port (no hard set-up involved) and voila! tons of space. Plus, whenever I want to share my stuff I just unplug it and take it with me to work or to a friend's house.

Add/Remove Programs
XP - Click Start, Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs. In the Currently installed programs box, click the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove. If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
Vista - Click Start, Control Panel, and then double-click the Programs and Futures. From here select the program you want to uninstall and then click on Uninstall/Change.

Get some external memory and move the songs to it.

OR burn the songs to a cd.dvd then delete them from your hard drive.

Defrag.....Start>Programs>Accesories>System Tools>Defrag......Warning, it may take a long time, but well worth it.
