Hands up here who believed their parents knew everything when they were a kid? Who believed in Santa Claus because their parents said he was real? And who, once they grew older, realised he wasn't, and that their parents had made up a story to soften the real world and make it nice and warm and fun.

Isn't this actually the same process by which we are brought to believe in gods? The made-up stories to soften the edges of human ignorance about the universe with a simple "God did it"?

How come we can so easily let go of one kind of mythology and yet we're prepared to kill each other to protect another? Did I miss a meeting of the Logic Committee or something?

Godshandmaiden, that's exactly the point. It is written...but it's also written that a big fat man with a big white beard rides around the world one night a year on magical flying reindeer (is that miraculous, orthodoxy-fans?), delivering presents to children. Where is the ACTUAL difference?

JC Superstar - loved the answer.

When I was a child I spoke as a child I understood as a child I thought as a child; but when I became a man I put away childish things." I Cor. xiii. 11.

Straight from the bible, I don't understand why the christians dont see the irony in this.

I came across this quote some time ago and it goes a bit like this

We are born to loving Parents and they tell us 2+2=5
We go to School and Teachers tell us 2+2=5
Some get to Uni and Professors tell the the same 2+2=5
The media constantly confirm 2+2=5
Everyone around us believes the same going through the same in those circumstances and that's what we face every day
Is it any wonder billions of people go through an entire physical lifetime believing 2+2=5
Of course the answer goes on equalling four its just most people do not know that and most cannot be bothered to find out
If we want to be free maybe its time that we did

I'm not prepared to kill anyone in the name of religion, chocolate, maybe, but not religion! I grew up knowing that my Daddy was Santa Claus, I even helped my Mum to make his new suit one year when the old one was too worn out to wear at the kids christmas party. I was brought up to question everything, including religion, and still do. I believe we should try to understand other peoples viewpoints and if we don't agree with what they believe, we should agree to disagree, not try to force our beliefs onto them. Probably not a popular answer, but I don't mind, I have chocolate!! Take care and keep smiling.

how dare you compare the Holy God of Israel to santa claus?

It is written that the 'fool says in his heart there is no God...' Ps. 14:1.
God said that I am the Lord and there is no other. Isaiah 45:18 c

Now, you can either choose for God or against Him. The choice is yours. But God will not be mocked by you or anyone else. right now he is still gracious toward you [as he has been to many of us] and are waiting for you to repent and to come to faith in Him through Jesus.

I was not brainwashed to believe in God. I made a choice with my logical mind. God is after all more rational and logical than anyone could be. Now I find extreme joy in knowing and serving him. And if I have to do it all over again, I'll do exactly the same!

What can santa offer you? a gift under a tree?
God offers me life everlasting, hope eternally, peace and joy that surpasses all understanding! God gives purpose and meaning to my life. In Christ he made me a new creation and now i live for Him .

Santa Claus did not inspire people like Matthew, Luke, John, Paul etc. to write over so many centuries, a book so intriguing that people frought in the middle ages to own a copy or even a page of it. There must be some thing about God, every ones talks about him one way or the other, and that how the word spreads. Santa Claus, show me his Word.

Santa is a fun fairy tale we tell our children. The same with the Easter bunny or Tooth Fairy. However, it's "fiction." People didn't get healed. People weren't brought back from the dead! No one ever saw Santa 3 days later rise from the dead! People, Jesus was alive and walked the Earth. It's a fact. There's witnesses to his life, his death and his resurrection. He still lives in each of us. When he comes again, non-believers will fall on their face and worship him.

Santa is real to young children. I do know not how to define reality, and furthermore I do not believe in objective reality . People say that there is no God because we cannot prove or disprove his existence, but this argument is specious because , ultimately nothing is disproveable or proveable. The only way to approach truth is via closed axiomatic system such as mathematics, and even that,as Goedel showed, is incomplete.

Ones childhood is a magical time, full of wonders and innocence. When children age and can figure a few things out for themselves Santa Clause is left by the wayside but when they have children of their own they are happy to bring Santa back for their children. Who can the excitement of a child on Christmas Eve. What harm has been done? What confounds me is the fact that people don't see the falsity of religion and also leave it by the wayside.

On one hand I think it would blow many peoples mind if they had to expose their consciousness to the fact of our vulnerability, and loneliness in this infinite universe with no Godly protector.

On the other hand it takes a very closed mind to think that only what we humans can see and understand is real and true and there is nothing beyond our understanding.

As usual the truth probably lies somewhere in between.
