Try recording yourself on a camera with you singing and post them on youtube or another video host and get a music myspace page so you can start gaining fans which would eventually lead to maybe someone discovering you.

Lots of singers enter some sort of competition, whether it is a talent show or a pageant, or a karaoke tournament (?) or whatever, but it's also about who you know and just plain salesmanship and PR.
You can cut a demo and circulate it freely.
You can sing for free for anyone who will listen. Weddings, funerals, church choir, community theater, graduations, humming in the grocery store, open mic night, etc.
TAKE SINGING LESSONS. Whether you are a rocker or an opera soloist, your voice needs training to withstand a singing career. Not to mention that a vocal coach will give you one more connection in a group of people in the biz who know you...which leads to
SCHMOOZING. And hanging out where people are, and selling yourself to people who can help you get somewhere in your career.
You also need to learn about the business end of being a talent PRODUCT. Which means you need money smarts, marketing smarts, and may necessitate some psychological work on your part...to be able to withstand being a product. Like any other product, sometimes you will meet the need, sometimes you won't so you will be rejected plenty. So while the industry itself will help you get a thicker skin (if you have any chance at all) you will want to either learn or sustain your confidence, and settle some of your past issues...yep. Therapy. Of course not so much that you aren't an artist anymore! :) But you don't want the business to eat you alive.
Related: have something else going so your whole life isn't wrapped up in the music business. Not only some other plan to make a living, but some other hobby. This will help you stay in love with singing, instead of becoming enslaved by it.
Above all, you need to stay true to yourself and your principles. You don't need to compromise on the important things...keep your clothes on, don't screw over anyone who is nice to you, and don't asskiss with a jerk just to get famous.

There are dozens of non contest related avenues for a vocalist to make it. I would make sure you've done lessons though. Recording studios know what they're looking for and it isn't mediocrity. If you haven't done a few years of singing lessons chances are you won't be signed without the aid of a competition or something. Some people do have a good enough voice on their own but these people are extremely rare. Unless your flawless, learn your craft properly, stay fit and make yourself attractive and you will probably be on your way.
