Starting with a 1 ton pick up truck is unusual. If that is, what is offered to you, then take it and say thank you.
There has to be a reason for having a truck, I assume it is coming from a family member. Try it for a while and try to get used to it. It may not be as bad as you think. I agree with most of the other answers in that it is overkill, but it someone offers it for free, then take it. good luck.

The question is what do you plan to do with it? Are you looking for something to get around in the winter or in mud? Do you have to pull a trailer or haul stuff often? Is it for school/work commute? Do you travel long distances?
A 1990-99 Ford F-350 is a good work truck as well as an attractive looking pickup. From 1990-1996, the F-350 came with several different sized engines. A 5.8L gas (which is a good general purpose motor and good fuel economy), a 460 CID gas (good power & low end torque, poor fuel economy), and a 7.3L diesel (the older models were mostly natural aspirated engines and the newer ones were turbo-charged Power Strokes). The diesel is the most popular as they were very economical (cheap to own, better fuel economy compared to gas engines) and had overall more horsepower and torque.
The 1997-1999 F-350 had the newer gas motors (can't remember the engines sizes right off the top of my head). A Triton V-8, Triton V-10, and the Power Stroke 7.3L were the engine options for that year. Again, the diesel being the most economical.
The average fuel economy ranges between 8-16 mpg for gas, 10-20 mpg diesel. The fuel economy also depends on driver habits, city/highway driving, towing, maintaince, and what type of transmission you have (auto/manual).
The pickup is a good vehicle, but the question is what is your ideal car going to be used for. If you live in the country or on a farm, then this would be a good vehicle. But for in town, short commutes, I would suggest finding something a little better in fuel economy.

An F350 is quite a bit of truck, and as your first vehicle, I would avoid getting it unless you absolutly need it. The cost for fuel and maintence would be horrible.
But, I would have to say, that if you're going to look for a smaller car, look for a Honda or a Ford. They are the highest two most reliable auto makers in the US. (According to 2007Q1 GQRS). Personally, I'd look for a Escape. They're extremely reliable, can go almost anywhere, and get great fel mileage. I have an 01 Escape, with V6 engine. I get 25mpg, and I've never had to do anything to it except regular maintence.

With the cost of fuel I would say no it wouldnt be a good first truck. I had an F250 that only average 12 mpg on the interstate and I sold the truck a month later because gas was costing more than the truck payment was. A Ford Ranger or something of that size would be a good truck to get. unless you plan on pulling a lot of good sized trailers around than the F350 would be a good rig.

If it is being gven to you, then it is a good deal.
I own and love my 1986 model (diesel)
As a general rule, If you need to pull a two horse trailer or bigger, then the F350 is a great choice.
If you only load up the fishing gear on the weekends, then the F150 would be a better choice, although, it is not offered in a diesel anymore. :(
If you are considering auto's , then I would suggest that you look at a Mustang or Camaro/Firebird for your first vehicle.

You would probably be better off with somehting smaller.
You could drive it but it is a lot of truck. not to mention will probably get gas milage in the low teens if you are lucky.
My uncle has a 3/4 ton and on a good day, drivieng the speedlimit, not towing anythign, only gets about 10 miles to the gallon.

No, not an F350. An F150 yes, it's definitely manageable, but an F350, just completely impractical... gas, size, repairs... you don't want that trouble. Chicks in trucks are hot... only if they can manage them though.

Trucks don't offer much in the way of injury protection if in an accident. If you don't feel comfortable in a large vehicle you won't be a confident driver. It will consume your dollars in mass quantity for gas.
