There is an answer to this. To understand it you have to stop focusing on any aspect of your physical existence, and look at the question from a purely spiritual point of view. All religions agree that man has an immortal soul, but many of them fail to mention that man in fact IS the immortal soul.

The soul makes us unique. Humans are the only creature on the planet with the capacity for growth. We alone have the ability to become more than we are. And that is why we are here. That is why God created the Universe. So that we can become more than we are. So that we can grow.

And this is also why we must endure pain and suffering and war and famine. All of these things are part of the process of growth. Yes it sucks, but nothing worth having comes easily and Heaven is no exception.

Heaven is a state of mind,

I've thought about that too, and here are some answers, but I think they are only bits of the total answer.
1) We are made in God's image. When he made the earth he put us there in the same way an artist likes to sign their own work. By us being there shows everyone that he made the earth.
2) God gave us an inquisitive nature, which is essential because really we are the only animals around that have half a chance of appreciating the skill and knowledge he used in creating everything.
3) If he created us in heaven, then we would have got there without deserving it, and, more important, if some of us went to hell, we would have gone there without deserving it too. Since God is a god of justice, then we would have been punished or rewarded with not having done anything to deserve it, which is unjust.

We DID start in heaven, that is. Our time on Earth has to do with something that we are not allowed to know. That is why many belief systems call this place 'veiled', as in "Apocalypse" (greek meaning "to unveil")

I have heard many stories, but the one I figure is the answer to that is that while we were immortal, before we came to this place, we all decided (yes, much like the Douglas Adams novel about Life, the Universe and Everything), how we were going to design the Earth and our situation within it. Those souls that were able to survive pre-historic times would never have survived modern times, and vica versa. Everything has a time, a place and an order.

addendum: there were quite a few revelations that were written down, and then taken away, with God explaining: "You are not yet ready for this."

Just my take on it, and I know everyone has a different opinion, but simply put:

God did originally make the earth a heavenly place when he put humans here. Remember the story of Adam & Eve in the garden of Eden. All they had to do was obey Him, which is all He still asks of us today. But they chose not to, and so just like a parent with a child, He had to punish them by taking away the perfection of their lives that they did not appreciate. They then had to live on earth as we do now to this day.

In my mind it boils down to two things: 1. We are meant to use our time on this earth to show God that we do, indeed, appreciate what we do have here. Humility and simplicity in life, and doing unto others, are things we can learn the most from. 2. We are here so that we can, and will appreciate heaven when we finallly get to spend our eternities there.

Good question though! Makes one think...

I think the blue print for earth was initially paradise and close communion with God, but Adam and Eve sinned and God cannot be where sin is (totally against His Character). The reason for all this when God is all knowing is more than the human mind can fathom. He gave us free will, and He knew that things would change but He being bound by his own laws could not reverse it. So He gave us Jesus. So our happiness can start here.

Hello and Love in order to be love MUST have the right to say NO and so to test mankind God decided first to see what they would do when given that powerfull gift of choice now He knows very thing but the rest of us don't, so God allowed us to see for ourselves the results of sin so when WE DO get to Heaven "IF" as it says in John 14:15 we love Him enough to keep His commandments THEN we will be Happy in heaven otherwise we would be miserable if permitted to go there, heaven must come within before coming without, God bless find out more free bible lessons www.amazingfacts.org

Before creation, it was only God, his son, and myriads of angels. Humans did not exist in Heaven, then. God created Earth to house his physical, not his spiritual, creation... humans. God intentions were good, but creation was ruined by Satan, one of his angels. The good thing is that God has not changed his mind of finishing his original work. He is allowing time to give us an opportunity to be part of what He has in store for us in the future. After Armageddon, things will be different.

You may think this a stupid answer, but the motives behind God's actions can't be known. Why would He even bother at all with creating a universe instead of just enjoying his lot with Heaven and His angels? Was He bored? Does He have the same artistic drive that we humans have? Who can say?

It isn't a bad question. God created man with free will. the ability to choose to worship him rather than made a perfect infallible being who worshiped God because he was perfect.
God is all knowing and knew that mans free will and sin nature would cause him to fall from his glory but God had a plan of salvation to bring his creation to his righteouness.
God's plan was not an instant being but one perfected over time through his atonement one who chooses God's righteouness.
