Even though little ole JR's are Small they can get agressive as all get out, and you can tell her this... " the only way dogs get aggressive is by teaching them aggression.. and hitting them, even by the lightest tap, is teaching him aggression" Not to mention!! that tapping them on the muzzle, can dammage thier nasal cavity, and kill thier smelling senses!!

Yes!! it is abuse... Listen to this!! hitting a animal is abuse.. now repeat it... just like in some counties in some states.. spanking a child is considered abuse... so you can't use that one anymore.. sorry.. than line is used up!

NOW! When an alpha dog in a pack is showing is rank, he will take his muzzle and smack the other dog UNDER the muzzle, So to use it as Human to dog, humans should take 2 fingers and LIGHTLY tap UNDER the muzzle to show rank. (although I still do not reccomend)

As for her hitting on the back of the neck.. NOPE.. wrong again!! She is refering to when a MOTHER or an ALPHA MALE will Grab behind the dogs ears and SHAKE the head quickly 2 to 3 times to get thier attention. So to use this in training.. the human should grab the skin behing the ears, and do the same but lightly.. (Again, I do NOT reccomend this)

Let her know, she is not using the techniques correctly, and that book is outdated..

Jackrussells are extremely smart, and they know what buttons to push, tell her if she remains calm durring training, and not let little ole whathisname take her on, she will over power him, and he will obey.

Positive training, always works best!

Call ASPCA and tell them about the girl who abuses her Jack Russel Terrier. She is NOT supposed to hurt her dog in that kind of way. Go up to her and smack her across the face and see how she likes it to be hit. One time my friend was hitting her cats because they were fighting with the dogs and she kept hitting the dogs because they would get their anger out on her because she'd keep on pulling the dogs back from fighting and I slapped her a couple of times and she got mad at me for doing it and I think she got annoyed. Now she knows how it feels to be the dogs and the cats while being hit all the time. Actually, everytime I see her abusing an animal, I slap her or punch her. I know it's not the way to stop abuse, but she won't understand at all. She's like talking to a wall and the only way to let her know is to do something harsh to her.

Yes, I know all most every question, there is a person raving about something. For instance, I have an outside dog. Oops, I just let out the horrible secret!!! People get beat up because of this. Now I know smaller breeds need to be indoor, but mine is a German Shepherd!! I take good care of her, and she is a very nice, loving, well-behaved dog. You'd think if I would be abusing her, she would have behavior issues or something!

I would tell her what you feel and let her know that you asked the Yahoo community for an answer because it bothered you the way she was treating her dog. Jack Russell's are terriers and all terriers should only be owned by certain people who understand them. She obviously doesn't know what she is doing, or anything about the breed. Terriers can be difficult to handle as they are a very active breed of dog. They are an awesome and tenacious hunting breed. All terriers need training and consistency in their training. They are very eager to please the owner, however, they need to be taught what pleases you and what doesn't. She needs to get a choke collar, learn how to put it on, and how to use it to correct the dog without hitting him. She can hurt the dog by doing this. This isn't cool. Voice commands, with proper use of a choke collar (popping), with plenty of praise will do wonders for these smart little dogs. They are fast and eager learners. They love to do tricks. These dogs need lots of exercise even with their small size. They have tons of energy and need to learn positive outlets for that energy.

I would also suggest even to her parents that they need to find an obedience club or trainer to learn how to properly care for and train this breed.

Smacking across the muzzle isn't ideal but my parents have a jack russell and he is impossible to walk, nasty and horrible. My parents have given up trying to discipline him because nothing worked, not even a smack on the nose, locking outside, crating, spraying with water, citronella collar. Maybe if you are on friendly terms you should talk to her about other training techniques and try to help her solve her problem, she may be frustrated and not know of any other methods that fear training. If there is no improvement you should think about reporting it.

In the show Dog Whisperer with the fantastic Cesar Millan, Cesar says that when dogs bark and are disrespectfull, sound makes no difference, so he says you are supposed to touch, not kick, the dog between the ribs and legs. This doesnt hurt if you only touch, it just snaps them out of it. Lots of people hit their dogs when they bark, and it doesn't work.
Maybe she heard from one of those people.
Give her my tip, but try not to sound like your butting into her life with her dog.
Hitting isnt the right way of making them stop. Touching is.

Actually as much as I love animals, this may just be one of the many techniques people use. Just like people seem to like dragging their dogs over to an accident they had in the hallway and rubbing their noses in it. In fact in the past, this is what people did. They didn't have the beleif's we do nowadays of gently teaching your dog. Just like breaking horses, they broke dogs. In fact my mother was raised on a farm that did this. So just try to inform her of better ways. It's pretty dumb for one more dog to go the pound and possibly getting euthanized for something like that. It's sord of like that debate on wether spanking your child is abuse or not.

Do you have a local animal control in your area? It's abusive and a lousy way to teach an intelligent animal to keep striking it in such a manner. Place a call to them and explain what's going on. Thanks for taking care of a bad situation. You have a really big heart.

Get some videos or pictures of the abuse then call animal services.
