If a draft were to come about again he might have a good chance of getting a deferral since he'll be a college student. However, if it's a bad war...no such luck. Not to mention it's illegal for 18 y/o males to not sign up.

If women want to be treated as equal why aren't there outcries over that?!

There have been plenty of promises that there will never be a draft again. But, we all know promises get broken. If there were a draft, its anyone's chance to go. If it is true that when you're 18 your likeliness to be drafted goes up, he wouldn't have anything to worry about because I would find it near impossible for them to find a reason to start a draft within the next year :)
I was told if there ever was a draft, and you were drafted while in college, you would finish out that term/semester.
Even if he was drafted, its not the end of the world. People do make it through wars unscathed. Plus he wouldn't need financial aid because he'd get his GI Bill!
Make sure he does register because I think you can go to jail otherwise. Plus it won't just keep him from getting financial aid, he will be asked on job applications down the line, and it will show on his background checks!

First off our military is an all volunteer force. That means we do not at this moment have a draft, (unless you want to count the IRR). This is a proven and superior system to a conscript Army.
No that said all males upon reaching there 18th birthday have to register for the selective service system. That is the law. If he does not do it, no finacial aid. If the day ever came there was a draft being 18 means he will be drafted no matter if he were in college.

Number One; there is no draft!!!
Number Two; it is the law to register for selective service.
He was supposed to register on his 18th birthday!
The likelyhood of the draft making a comeback. Slim, very slim.
The draft has changed as well.
In the old days 365 balls were put in a rotating drum. Each had a date on it. If a ball was drawn with the date of 18 September then everyone with that birthday had to report for a physical and the beginnings of the induction process. There were plenty of loopholes for people to take advantage of.
The new version; the first year you are eligible is your greatest change to be drafted, the second year the odds go down considerably, the third even lower, and so on. If you make it pass the first or second year then you can probably breath easy and go on with your life.
Of course if your country needs you and you refuse then you are a tu** to many veterans such as myself.
by the way danoboy, the dems are the ones pushing draft bills beware of what you wish for.

Because of the tremendous outcry and low standing in the polls of President George Bush, a draft would be disastrous and probably cause more protests and picketing.

He may have to register, but, I serious doubt there will be a draft anytime soon.

It's a shame young men and women can't be drafted into the Peace Corp!

If there were ever a draft he would have a chance of being selected. So far the only person pushing for a draft is Rangel.

If he doesn't register no financial aid for him.

THERE WILL BE NO DRAFT! This type of question keeps popping up. The military has had an all-volunteer force since 1972. Recruiting and retention goals for all branches continue to be met each year. He has to register because it is the law. A law which is a holdover from the days when the Soviet Union still existed and we had a general mobilization plan to meet the contingency of moving to contact against massive amounts of Soviet infantry.

It'd have to be some big war for the government to draft again. If there was another draft, maybe; but I wouldn’t worry about it.
It's illegal for him to not sign up anyway so don't let a question on the FAFSA keep you awake at night...that thing is horrible enough to deal with during the day, ha-ha.

There is no draft at present. If there were to be one, we don't know how they would implement it or how many would be affected. Sorry, there's no way to answer that other than his changes are 50/50 - he'd get picked or he wouldn't.
