It depends on what you mean by prank calling. If the kid just called 911, it is not likely that the cops will do anything more than to read him the riot act about how bad this could have turned out. If he told the police that a crime had been committed and one hadn't, then the kid could be charged with filing a false police report or reporting a false crime. Either way, it is not likely that he would go to jail. More likely to go on probation for a while and maybe have to sit through some classes.

It depends on the state, but in many states anonymous phone calling is considered to be harassment or some other misdemeanor. Jail is unlikely for a first time offender but you could have to go to court, hire an attorney, and either do some community service or pay a fine.

When I was a kid - before - long before call display - no - there was no way to get caught -

Nicky Nicky 9 doors on the telephone

But now you get caught and I suppose if you did it repeatedly you would get into trouble

Once - ???? Probably no - I would be surprised -

What you want to say is - I am sorry I must have mis dialed

Im not sure what would happen today, but back in middle school, in the 80's, I called 911 from a school pay phone and said my grandmother was on fire during lunch. They somehow found out it was me and I got in trouble by the principal.

Well, the police can come out and have a talk with you.

If you do it a lot, to where it is considered harassing the people, they can file charges. I am not sure if they would arrest you. There are actually laws about how you can use phones.

the thing is, if the police come out to talk to you about this ( and tell you to quit) your parents will probably go through the roof.

No. the only time you will get in trouble with the law for prank calling someing is if you are prank calling 911 or if you repeatedly prank call someone and make threats.

ahaha. If it's a hotline than itsconsidered a federal offense. Also me and my friends were prank calling a teacher and they called the cops and the cops called our parents.

Yes you can get into trouble for harassment if you make unwanted phone calls to people. There are laws against it.

No, not for one telephone call that went unanswered.

If you or whoever continued to do it, it is considered harassment and misuse of communications systems, which is illegal. I would quit while you are ahead.
