Atheist, Aloha and Fred pretty much covered the concept of "holiday".
And I think it was the Roman Catholics/Christians who first used that term.
Holidays such as Christmas and Easter were issued to appease the Pagan and Christian Romans alike, since originally they were Pagan celebrations.
For example, Christmas coincides with a Pagan festival for the son of Isis on December 25th, which later Pope Julius I declared as Jesus' birthday.
But in answer to your question about Darwin...perhaps there should be a celebratory day, there are those who don't believe his theory has flaws. Myself excluded.
Though I'm not big on celebrating individuals, another day off wouldn't hurt. He he.

I'm surprised by the attitudes of the other answerers. Here is my opinion, (from a non-atheist).
Yes, I believe Atheists should also have holidays, however the term "holiday" is misleading, as it is literally "Holi=(holy) Day" so maybe having another term to coin a day of celebration for Atheists is in order.
Make a list of things that are commonly important to Atheists, be it science and evolution, study, debate, intelligence, etc. Then, like we seem to do with every president, assign a day that would coincide with the importance of those days. Viola, you have Atheist-Days.

There is only one national holiday that is religious in nature (Christmas). The rest are civil. I see nothing overtly religious about MLK Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, or Columbus Day. While people can, and do, give Thanksgiving a religious context, it is really an American tradition with little religious meaning.

No. Holidays are lame. Most of them are non religious anyway. Christmas and easter are the exceptions. Let's get rid of holidays and just have days off. I am a grinch though so ignore me.

I always get a bit mad when people who say they are atheist find themselves buying christmas presents... and wanting to receive christmas presents. Or when they have their kids searching for easter eggs.... its just not right. It takes meaning away from some very important holidays that are based on religious reasons.

yes, what about 9/11? At that day, just be grad how many people died because they don't believe in god? I guessing that they were only a few atheist at the World Trade Center but still.

The name holiday is a religious term. The notion that any of these days are holy is pretty ridiculous.
