Well to be honest, after the Soviet Union split up a large chunk of former Soviet forces were lost to Russia, via the Ukraine and the Caucuses breaking away. Plus, Russia doesn't have Eastern Europe to count on anymore.
Recently, I read that Russia had five remaining aircraft carriers but had to decommission three because of their state of ill preparedness.
What worries me is Russian Nationalism. With Russia trying to reassert herself on the world stage, what if some rogue nuclear scientist, gives his nuclear know how to rogue nations like A.Q. Khan of Pakistan did?

Actually, since the cold war ended it has been found that the Soviet Union had very poorly trained, poorly equipped armed forces with unbelievably poor moral. Yes, they had a huge army, but the days of waves of soldiers running at each other with fixed bayonets ended after the Korean war. No doubt their rocket and missile forces would have caused tremendous damage to the West, but we now know that they had to have the large numbers because of their inefficiencies. The whole Soviet Block was in similar circumstances, but they had us believing otherwise. Now that the USSR has broken up the massive forces they had at their command no longer exist. Some of our former enemies in the USSR are now our allies and members of Nato. Russia still poses a threat, of course, but the overpowering resources of the US are way out in front with no other country even coming close. The terrorist threat (no matter which country it comes from) is more serious and has given us far more casualties than the entire Cold War in all the years after Korea. Any dinky little country that somehow gets possession of nukes and other WMD's is a much greater threat to us than Russia ever will be. Is the US the most powerful country in the World? Certainly it is. Does that protect us from death and destruction? You know it doesn't. Personally, I don't fear Russia that much because the enemy you know, you can control. It's the enemies we don't know that I fear.

You are wrong, the only thing Russia has on the US is a larger tank regime as far as planes the US runs circles around them. In war it all comes down to the people running the show (Generals) and as of late I am not so impress with the people in charge of the Iraqi war.

I seriously do not want to know- too many big weapons in the hands of people with small minds.
But if you can have a bunch of totally untrained insurgents with Russian designed and built weapons, AK47 RPG etc. Running the Mighty US Army ragged for 6 years, how would a few hundred thousand properly trained troops, with next generation weapons do???

Life on Earth would be over as we know it. Your talking about world war three. There would be so many nukes set off that the whole world would be affected. We would go into a nuclear winter that would last for years. Those people that don't die from radiation poisoning will starve to death.
