I would have to say both previous answers are a little misguided.

There are probably many Arabic loan-words in both languages and both were one written in Arabic script but today Turkish (from TUrkey) is written in Roman latters, like English while Turkmen is written in Cyrillic letters, like Russian.

The two languages do belong to the Turkic language family, whih includes languages like Azerbajani and many Central Asian languages, but it has nothing to do with Tajik.

History divided the modern TUrkish peoiple and the Turkmen's long ago so they are probably as similar as say Hebrew and Ethiopian (both semetic languages.)

I believe that Islam is a large religion in both. So arabic is probally present, however, as Turkmenistan was once a part of the Soviet Empire it may have Russian speaking citizens. Both Languages probally in reality play a large role in Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan is where the ancestors of the tribal group the Turks more than likely originated before setting up the ottoman turkish empire, one of the oldest empires when it was broken up shortly after the first world war. I believe 1924 officially.

Most people in Turkmenistan speak Tajik, an Indo-European / Indo-Iranian language closely related to Persian (also called Farsi) in neighboring Iran. For example, "house" and "fox" are khane and rubah in Persian, khana and ruboh in Tajik; "high" is baland in Persian, boland in Tajik. Both languages say shab for "night."

Tajik was traditionally written in the Persian / Arabic script but since the 1920's has been written in a variation of the Russian Cyrillic alphabet.

Turkish belongs to a different language group than Tajik. The Turco-Tartar branch of Ural-Altaic. The people of Turkmenistan are of mixed Indo-Iranian and Turkic stock.

However, Kirghiz and Uzbek spoken to the north of Turkmenistan are Turkic languages relatively close to the Osmanli Turkish of Turkey.
