It's a tough pill to swallow, especially since God said he was afraid we were going to climb into heaven somehow, on the same planet in which there isn't enough oxygen to live at the top of the tallest mountains and in a world where we've escaped our atmosphere completely in rockets. Also, the diversity of languages and abstract thought made our modern society possible, with airplanes and rockets that climb higher than the brick and mud tower ever would have, especially without the benefit of modern architecture. It was World War II cryptography that spawned computers and modern technology, and that wouldn't have been possible if we all spoke the same language. In fact, if we didn't have abstract thought, or the capability to form our own languages, most of our written communication and mathematics would be impossible as well.
If the story were true, destroying the tower gave mankind everything we needed to do everything God feared we would do, wherease if he'd simply let mankind finish it, we'd have a giant lump of brick and mud we'd eventually just forget about.
But I don't think it's the hardest story to believe. That would definately have to be the two versions of Judas' death, both of which are Canon. In one, he threw his money into the fire and hung himself. In another, he bought a field, prospered for a time, enjoyed life, and fell down in the fields one day dead (presumably struck down by God). Obviously, both versions can't be true, and even the truest of true believers has to pick one or the other to run with.
So, since even people that believe in every single thing in the bible, can't believe in one or the other version of Judas' death, it has to be, as far as I can tell, the hardest story to believe.

If you can't believe this story you might has well not believe any of them. God would not have put in the Bible if it were not so. I believe every word of the Bible from cover to cover! Listen the story of the Tower of Babel is why we have different languages today.

In Shinar, kingdom of Nimrod the hunter men get together on a great building project--a city and a tower with it's top in the heavens. God looks down at this co-operative effort of man trying to make himself god-like, and sees it as the beginning of worse rebellion against him. So he divides men by language barriers, and scatters them abroad-the very thing they were trying to insure against. And the great tower remains unfinished.
The tower of Babel was in all likelihood a muti-storeyed temple tower, or ziggurat, similar to those developed in Babylonia in the early 3rd millennium BC. Genesis Chpts 10-11

Of course the story is unbelievable - to those whose mind is veiled by the god of this world - Satan [2 Corinthians 4:4]

I think the Tower of Babel is one of the best Bible stories there is. To me it is a great description of why we are all so much alike, yet we come from different places and speak different languages.

If you believe the Bible to be what it is, the true inspired Word of God, then you must believe it. If you see the bible as some type of fantasy book, say, like Harry Potter, then you will have a hard time believing alot of it. Remember, nothing is impossible with God!

They have found and excavated the site. Have detailed measurements of the tower and how it was constructed and by whom. Nimrod. The account is not so large scaled or fantastic to be unbelievable.
And after all who really cares ?
God Bless!

No one can make you believe. Pray and ask in faith believing you will receive an answer to the validity of the story. Be sincere and full of faith. Have patience. You will receive an answer.

I don't know why god decided to impede our progress all of a sudden by making everyone speak different languages. It is after all just a story though.
