Christmas is an ancient Pagan holiday that was already celebrated more than one thousand years before Jesus was born. It honors the Egyptian Sun Goddess named Isis when the amount of sunlight starts to increase after the shortest day of the year.
The name of the holiday was change by some people in the Roman Empire who became Christians just because it was the official state religion. They were not true believers and wanted to continue in their old religious traditions. They changed the name in an attempt to make the holiday acceptable to Christians. It actually took hundreds of years for Christmas to become popular among Christians.

You don't have to be religious to enjoy sitting around a dead tree eating candy out of your sock. I don't "take" the day off work, they give me the day off. I would go in, but as I work as a teacher, I would have nothing to do on days off. The only "official" holiday that is religious is Christmas. All the others are civil holidays.

Christmas for me, has always been a time to visit family and share gifts. Even though I knew Christmas was a religious holiday, I never celebrated it in that way. Don't ask me why.

Hell ya, how else am I gonna get my holidays paid for.

However, I did volunteer to work christmas at our workplace, because it was way more important for some young parents to be at home with their children, when they opened up their gifts from Santa.

My daughter was 12, she didn't care if I was home or not. We opened her presents the night before, she was way past believing in "Santa".

Other than that, religious holidays, are designated as days off, and for the most part, I couldn't work them if I wanted to, because the entire building was shut down...

Most businesses in the USA give you Christian holidays off with pay. It is a bigoted practice because it doesn't apply to any religious holidays but Christian.

So most atheist take Christmas off its a freebie....and we have no choice.

Of course we take the holiday off. What else are we supposed to do when the doors are closed? Hang around outside till the day is done?

Well Christmas is more of a marketing event than a religious holiday. Think fast: who do you think of immediately when you hear the word Christmas? If your answer was "Jesus" you are probably in the minority. Even most Christians would think of Santa Claus if they didn't have time to catch themselves!
