I am 14, and today I went with my dad to our local firearms dealer. When I was there, I bought a Yugo SKS, and I was just wondering that when I completely dissasemble it, what are some of the best ways to get all of the cosmoline off? Thanks.

I soak all the parts of new my cosmo ridden rifles in *hot* water and scrub them down with a lot of old rags. The hot water helps break up the cosmoline and is easier on the weapon's parts than strong detergents. For the stock leave it out in the sun for a few days and most of the cosmoline should seep out.

I just went through the Cosmo battle again.

Paint thinner or if you are a purest. use Hoppes #9 to do the trick. Disassemble the entire thing.

I poured paint thinner in a disposable wallpaper tray, disassembled the gun, placed the parts in to soak over night. Then I used an old stiff toothbrush or take a cheapee 1" brush and cut off all but about 1/2" of bristles to clean up. As I'd clean parts up, i'd set them aside on the bench. Once done, I put the thinner back in a sealed coffee after straining the goop out of it with a funnel and coffee filter.

When you re-assemble spray each part with remington gun oil. Don't use WD 40, tends to have too many evaporates in it.

Cosmoline is wonderful stuff; it will keep you busy for the next month so you won't have time to get into mischief. If you have a garage where cars are repaired in your area visit it; ask if they will put your SKS in the parts washing machine and get the cosmoline off. That will take care of a lot of it; the rest you will need to get some brake parts spray cleaner and all your old toothbrushes. Put on your oldest and ready to throw away clothes and disassemble it into it's seven components and get to work; you should be able to get it done in an afternoon.

Get yourself a stiff bristled 2" paint brush (nothing expensive)
and but yourself a quart of Turpentine ($1.50-2.00 a quart at Lowe's or Home Depot) Strip your gun down and brush the turpentine on the metal parts to remove the cosmoline. It will not harm the finish on the metal or the wood stock parts. I suggest you do this outside on newspapers because of the smell and mess it's going to make. Once you get the cosmoline off, rub the clean parts with a cotton washcloth or towel piece and some light machine oil. Pretty simple and very effective. Congratulations on your new rifle. Remember safety first.....
